Customer Reviews of Tomb Raider Gold
If you liked the Indiana Jones movies, play this game. I love this game and that has NOTHING to do with how Lara looks, believe me. Yes, her controls do take some getting used to, but if you go through the practice area, you can master the moves in no time.
The plot is great- I love a good archeological puzzle, and the gameplay is exciting.
All in all, I'd say that this game is challenging without being too frustrating. If you like adventure games, get Tomb Raider now!
Entertaining for young and old
An addictive adventure, the earlier levels of Tomb Raider had us rushing home during our lunch breaks to squeeze in 30 min of playtime. I generally do not like pointless shoot-'em-up games, so I truly enjoyed this one. The game offered good mixture of attention to detail, some movement challenges, and relevant predatory targets. The video inserts are fairly well done, but tedious for younger players. Having enjoyed the early levels, I was a bit disappointed in the Atlantis segment, in which a realistic treasure hunt was replaced with a science fiction adventure. In addition, the ending was a bit anti-climactic. The extra Gold levels, however, gave us something to look forward to when we in fact completed the game. Suitable for kids, you'll be lucky if you can get Dad to stop playing so that you get a chance!
Great game
Playing this game makes me really appreciate the hard work that goes into making graphics for the Playstation 2. But I didn't buy Tomb Raider Gold for the graphics. I bought it because of Lara Croft. For some reason it's a pleasure to have her under your command. Combine Lara with running through tombs and shooting things and you have a fantastic video game. It's not the best in the world but it's good enough.
Graphics: 3.5
Yes, the graphics are horrid. But hey, it's the first game of the series and the people making it didn't know how much they could do with a simple polygon. The biggest problem is the flat background. It is highly detailed but that's what causes the problem. Since the background is so flat and the surface is so detailed it's difficult to tell where a ledge is at. Taking one wrong step could have you falling to your death. Lara was actually done very well. She's a bit choppy but her body movement is impressive.
Sound: 0.0
What? 0.0? Well, it's because I have no sound with my version of Tomb Raider. I know it's not my computer's fault so I lay blame on the game.
Control: 3.5
Another one of the problems that plagued Tomb Raider games. The control isn't THAT bad but there is much improvement needed. Jumping is a major downfall. The downfall is ... you FALL DOWN ... a LOT! There are many holes to jump over in the Tomb Raider games and Lara doesn't always jump when you tell her to. Also she doesn't always jump where you want her to. Jumps have to be made perfectly otherwise you'll have to start over from scratch or die. Another thing is the actual combat. Enemies will charge you while you're shooting at them and if they get too close it is difficult to get away so you can shoot them some more. Bad camera movement and bad controls are to blame.
Fun Factor: 4.0
With all the games faults it is still a great game to play. The storyline stinks but so what? You get to play Lara Croft and shoot things! What more could you ask for? I look forward to seeing Miss Croft make her way to the PS2.
