William Friedkin briefly revived his faltering career with this sleek, bleak thriller of a pair of secret service agents on the trail of a counterfeiter. William L. Peterson is the hotshot protégé of a career agent killed by the ruthless, almost feral counterfeiting genius Willem Dafoe (Platoon). Now Petersen, teamed with the smart but still green John Pankow (TV's Mad About You), is ready to twist arms, lean on criminals, steal, and even murder to exact his revenge. The harrowing chase through the streets of Los Angeles that climaxes on the freeway at rush hour, where Friedkin's brilliant twist sends them heading the wrong way, careening through a sea of cars coming straight at them, is still one of the most breathtaking car chases ever filmed. Friedkin's edgy crime thriller, stylishly shot in steely blues against hazy red and orange skies by Robby Muller (Paris, Texas), paints a very thin line between the good guys and the bad guys, and Wang Chung's techno soundtrack sets the proper mood--jumpy and alienated. It's a cynical and very brutal look into the world of law enforcement (adapted by Friedkin and former Secret Service man Gerald Petievich from his novel) and a cold portrayal of the power games between cops and feds, and cops and informants. John Turturro, Dean Stockwell, and Robert Downey Sr. are featured in supporting roles. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews of To Live and Die in L.A.

Ok, could have been a lot better
This movie had good story and actors who were kind of starting in the biz. The guy thats on CSI now was really bowlegged when he was younger, he had no sex appeal for that part and the little guy who played his partner just wasen't believeable as a street tough cop. Wiliam DaFoe was excellent as the genius counterfiter. When he's on screen, you just know he's going to be a big star. Enjoy!

Great Movie!
I've seen this movie several times and absolutely love it. William Peterson and Wilem Dafoe are at their best. There is action and a twist ending. Also one of the best car chases in film.

Mood altering, mind altering.
I saw another review of this movie that explained that when it originally hit theatres, critics trashed it and audience gave it a pass. I think I can explain. I was in my mid twenties when this movie came out. And I remember seeing it. And I remember the brash exhuberance of the 80's very well. I'm really not so shallow as to have actually thought this of the film, but I do remember thinking that it was not going to sit well with the current crowd. "Don't drag me down, man, I'm tryin' ta get my groove on here... and you're a real downer, dude..." <
> <
>The 80's are about Madonna... Tears for Fears... the Brat Pack... Ferris Bueller... Pretty in Pink... der Commissar and David Bowie. And then there THIS thing... This gritty, dirty, depressing, violent, bummer of an experience. <
> <
>Nobody wins. Everyone loses. Everything. And like in real life, they lose it all SUDDENLY too. Blam! "Wait... That's it? it's over? What the hell..." <
> <
>I think that's why I watch it at least once a year. You FEEL the heat, the humidity, the grime, the tension, the worry, the anger, the hate. <
> <
>I saw this move many years before I ever actually had to go to some of the seedier parts of L.A., and once there I remember it being very much the real experience. I actually felt in L.A. like I felt watching the movie. This one and "Less Than Zero" were two of a kind that I feel really captured the mood very well. <

>GREAT movie. Wrong time-period. If it had come out in the late 90's it would have rocked the box-office (IMO). <
