This minor 1955 work by Alfred Hitchcock, one of the lighter entries of his creative peak in the 1950s, is still imbued with the master's stock themes of shared guilt and romantic ambivalence. It is also hardly lacking in Hitchcockian cinematic inventiveness, such as a famous, often-imitated sequence in which some smooching between stars Cary Grant and Grace Kelly is intercut with a fireworks show that just happens to be going on outside in a Riviera setting. Grant plays a reformed cat burglar who is suspected of reviving his trade, though he knows someone else is using his old methods. A very enjoyable experience, but don't get this confused with Hitchcock's other Cary Grant film of that decade, which was a masterpiece: North by Northwest. --Tom Keogh

A very good film staring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Cary plays the part of a retired jewel thief. Someone begins to steal jewels and the local police think its Cary. Grace plays the part of the daughter of a rich Amrican widow. The film then covers how Cary Grants finds the people who have copied his MO.A fun romp through the French country side. Well acted and directed. A must see if you are a Cary Grant or Grace Kelly fan. <

It doesn't get much better than Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, and the French Rivera.

good old fashioned fun
This is a mystery that is much better than the current ones or the plethora of remakes coming out of Hollywood. While there are some formula elements to it, such as Hitchcock's obligatory blond, this movie feels fresh and fun after a full 50 years. That is really something! <

>I think that its succcess hinges on the acting, which is good all round, but also on the way that the audience is kept guessing. Is Grant reverting ot his old self? Is Grace Kelly doing it for kicks? Etc. What is so fun about it is that it never crosses the line of the utterly outlandish, with superhuman feats or a deus ex machina ending while maintaining the element of surprise and mystery. You just have man struggling - or posing to be - in search of solving a crime so that he won't get nailed. Then there is the setting, in 50s Monaco, which adds a twist of glamor. <
