Customer Reviews of Time Splitters
modern day Doom TimeSplitters, even the name is great, as my spare time has decreased substantially since buying this game. It isnt perfect, but gets damn close. As stated in other review, the graphics are good, if not outstanding; the sound is excellent, full stereo, plus great gun sounds; the gameplay is frantic, perfect for a console FPS. Why is this better than other FPS? well Goldeneye and Perfect Dark seem old technically now, Q3 Arena dosent run anywhere near as well on my iMac, and while Unreal Tournament is excellent on said iMac, the PS2 version is a little bland and drops in every arena compared to it's big brother. Oh and let's not forget the Dreamcasts attempt at Q3A, while adaquate in single play, the net stuff (at it's best) is about as crappy as I can handle on a PC. The thing that TimeSplitters does is allow you to have instant fun, especially with mates, for hours on end. Using the new PS2 multitap is recommended for multiplayer action - I tried my old boomerang PSX multitap, but it dosent detect more than one dual-shock plugged into it, also it stuffs data on the 8MB mem cards if they are plugged into the old grey ones... My only gripe is that there is no option for a USB keyboard and mouse. This game really let me know what I can hope for in the future - the rumours for TimeSplitters 2 are already being heard!
Golden Eye and Perfect Dark move over!
I have been a huge fan of the N64 first person shooter games. My friends and I played both Golden Eye and Perfect Dark over and over for countless hours of fun. But fortunately they have been 1 upped by a simply amazing game called Time Splitters. This was one of 3 games I got for PS2 and I simply love it. The graphics are gorgeous and the levels are amazing and huge. First I would like to warn that this game is a multi-player party game mainly. If your looking for a deep 1 player story mode this game doesnt have it. The 1 player mode is used to access more multi-player levels. These levels are every FPS gamers multi-player dream. Levels like the "Village" are stunning. The capture-the-bag mode is incredibly fun with you and some friends battling some Zombies in an all out war. The main part of the game that I want to touch on is the control scheme. If you have been playing Golden Eye or Perfect Dark for a year than you will simply hate the controls at first. I stress "at first". It is controlled by using the right analog stick to look and the left stick to move forward, back, and strafe left and right. But I got the hang of it after about 4 rounds of playing. Aiming up and down is still abit of a chore but these controls are perfect once you get the hang of them. After a while of playing you can even create your own level to play in Multi-player. While this is limited to a certain tile set and to indoors, it can break up the monotony of the other levels (which aren't very monotonous to begin with). The memory of how big the level can be is limited as well but I have created a 7 level capture-the-bag tower which i constantly play. This game is worth every penny and I highly suggest it to anyone with a PS2.
A True FPS Classic.
Ill agree with the majority opinion, the single player game could have been better. But for most of us, first person shooters are all about mowing down your friends with big guns, and this game delivers 100%. I have yet to encounter a 4 player split screen fps on ps2 that runs as fast or smooth. The level editor assures you will never run out of levels. The control is SPOT ON PERFECT, anyone who has spent time on HALO should be able to make the jump with ease, and if not, controls can be customized, inverse look ect. The variety of weapons make for a stunning variety of matches, and some funny ones to boot. The game also has a sense of humor, try playing team deathmatch as monkeys armed with only crossbows and proxy mines..its a blast. This game has been a staple of gaming night with friends for 2 years, and the fact that even 'X-box Halo Heads' give it its due is a testament to its playability.
