Customer Reviews of Tijerina and the courthouse raid
Too Little, Too Late Reis Tijerina has been glorified beyond the contribution he made to either an understanding between Hispanics and Whites or to the history of the southwest. He arose at a time of universal and romantic discontent in this country-- 1967. His primary attribute is that he was right; his primary liability is that he brought nothing constructive to the discussion of the seizure of land in the formerly Mexican areas of the US. It is interesting that Tijerina was raised in Texas, where Hispanics are forward-looking and generally today shrug their shoulders about the simple fact the Americans won the war and took the land, while he found a home in New Mexico, a state where the Hispanics still have trouble accepting the "New" attached to the word Mexico. Tijerina exposed the hypocrisy of the benevolent victors allowing the defeated Mexicans to keep their lands, when in fact conning them out of it, but that is simply the "ying" "yang" conflict of Americans attempting to follow their better angels while succumbing to greed and pettiness as mere ordinary humans. Tijerina was right, but he could never forgive the Americans. The success stories of today are found in Texas, where Hispanics comfortably take on increasingly important political and economic roles in the life of the state. New Mexico continues to wallow in the sad tragedies of past centuries.
