Customer Reviews of Thud
Reflect and digest Kevin Gilbert's last effort while being of this earth " Thud" is simply a masterpiece. Released in 1995, this CD has everything to offer. Beautiful melodies, outstanding musical performances, and the lyrical content that peers into the troubled mind and heart of this artist.
Knowing now of Kevin's passing and the struggles he endured, " Thud" is extremely autobiographical. The lyrics are a call for help from a pit of darkness. If the opening track serves as a sun rise, the album slowely follows the sun into the darkest depths of night. This CD should be a must listen. The uplifting music clouds the fear at times, but the underlying current of regret, rejection and fear of ones mortality creep in if you listen closely. Kevin we miss your ability to show us the sun and to show us also that the darkness is right around the corner.
5 Stars is all I can give it here, and the 1000 word review lenght allowed here only touches the surface.
Not as poignant as the Shaming of the True, but...
I'd like to think that someday people with appreciate the music of Kevin Gilbert (along with Toy Matinee) the way we appreciate the works of James Dean... a troubled, uncompromising artist who's life was cut way to short by his own all too obvious problems.
His bio in a nutshell: Musical Prodigy with the ability to create music on almost any instrument. Was the driving force behind progressive band Giraffe. Almost made the 'big time' as the driving force behind Toy Matinee, but was foiled by the corporate record executives who wouldn't take a chance. Had his record company back out half-way through this album. Created Sheryl Crow (she was a keyboard player in his band) only to have her turn her back on him after she hit it big with his music. Was one of the most sought after 'unknown' producers in Hollywood. Died of an accidental suicide not long after this album came out while trying to finish his opera-like the Shaming of the True.
Anyway... this is complex, layered music that sounds like pop on the outside, with clever lyrics and phenomenal production values throughout. Some of the tracks are a little flat, but if you can get your hands on the 'Live at the Troubador' versions they really perk up. BTW: Kevin produced Spock's Beard's breathru album 'Beware of Darkness'

Perhaps not a true review...
...i have only heard this disc a couple of times, as i don't own my own copy of it. But i do have the song "Song For A Dead Friend" that i've downloaded... and honestly... this is it. This is the saddest song ever written. It is unbelievable the amount of emotion that song has drawn out of me. Kevin was absolutely a brilliant lyricist and this song is about as well written as one can write about a fallen comrade. If you can imagine, if just for a moment, your best friend whom you grew up with and essentially became "you" with taking their own life later on in life after losing some contact with you... it is impossible not to cry. I can't believe that not every SINGLE review of this album raves about that song! I think because it doesn't quite fit with the mood of the album it is overlooked... but as an individual song, if you separate it from the album, it is just otherworldly.
This song is the only piece of music that can obliterate me and tear me to pieces every single time i listen to it... it is so horribly tragic and the lyrics are beyond brilliant. "there's lots of pages missing from my book... because you had more to give than what i took..." I just cannot imagine having to say those lines after my best friend killed himself. I could go on and on and on... but i will stop here. BUY THIS ALBUM! i have it on order, and i can't wait to own a copy, if only for that one song. I'll say it again... that IS the saddest song ever written. Don't look any further. I have an odd affection for sad music, and searched high and low for "the one"... and this is it. Nothing surpasses it.
