Customer Reviews of Thou knowest Lord, the secrets of our hearts
Solemn grace This is one of my favourite sacred choral recordings. Most of the tracks collected here are settings of the funeral sentences from the Book of Common Prayer. Cranmer's elegant sentences either express hope in the future resurrection, or urge the hearers to meditate on the shortness and sorrows of life. There are few texts in English so well-suited for choral singing.
Featured composers include Morley --- whose simple, elegant settings seem in sharp contrast with his other works; Gibbons, Locke, Weelkes, Purcell, and the relatively little known William Croft. High points include the Morley settings, Purcell's well known music from Queen Mary, Tomkins' -When David Heard that Absalom was Slain-, and Maurice Green's relatively familiar setting of a text from Psalm 39, "Lord, let me know mine end."
The only piece that seems slightly out of place in this collection is Purcell's -O Dive custos-. A Latin text that calls upon the muses and nymphs of stock pastoral poetry to weep for a royal funeral seems a somewhat odd memorial for a Christian monarch.
The Choir of Christ's College, Cambridge sounds just right for this material, and achieves a consistent mood throughout this recording.
