In this episode from the PBS series Discovering Everyday Spirituality, Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul, discusses the role of rituals practiced in everyday life. Individuals talk about how the mundane rituals in their days help them to "connect" with their inner selves. For example, a writer and minister describes how she does the same things every morning, and now her cup of coffee and hour of writing are vital elements in her life. Author Moore talks about how the future may be important to ponder, but it's "memory that feeds the soul." Echoing this theme, the camera follows a psychotherapist who regularly visits a horse stable in Brooklyn, of all places, as a way of recapturing memories of his rural youth. Tackling the issue of coping with terrible loss, a college professor explains how his son was paralyzed in a car accident and died within weeks, and now the father listens to his son's favorite Springsteen songs in the car as a way of getting "in touch with the vitality" of his son. Some of the concepts in this documentary may seem to stretch the definition of spirituality, but the presentation is always accessible and down to earth. --Robert J. McNamara
