When I first started playing Thief, I found it's game style refreshingly original. Sneaking around in the shadows and coshing unsuspecting guards is a lot of fun. The castle settings were my favorite. Graphics are top notch, and audio is great - half way through I upgraded to a MS Sound System and the game realy came alive - I found myself listening closely to the direction that footsteps were coming from. You get to choose from a range of custom kit at the start of each level, but you have no clue what will be relevant - though oddly you never realy seem to actualy require any of the additional items to complete a mission - so this is just fluff.

The lows

No multiplayer Predictable AI Odd mix of levels didn't quite hang together - some with just guards, others zombies, then weird quasi-intelligent fire-balls. Slow pace to the game - not a twitch-game, not likely to appeal to hard-core shoot-em-up fans.

I gave up about two thirds through, primarily because the AI of the guards got realy predictable, which detracted somewhat from an otherwise original game. I also got tired of the stupid zombies and some of the lengthier missions.

I'd love to see a sequel that stuck to the medieval castle theme, where the guard AI was cranked up real high, and added some multiplayer features.

The best overall game I've ever played
Each genre has it's problems. Flight simulators have a difficult time telling stories. Pure adventure games often have "artificial" interfaces that come across feeling far too fake. Strategy games take too long to play. And first person shooters have an inevitable "sameness" to them.

"Thief," happily, avoids the pitfalls of each genre, while borrowing the best qualities from them all. Like the best adventure games, the atmosphere created is so total you can't help but be lost in it. Yet it's not just posh backgrounds and surround sound moodiness: it's a game of strategy. The goal here is to steal, not to kill, and that makes your choices entirely more calculated than is common in action games. If you kill someone, you have to worry about how much noise he'll make in death. You'll have to hide the body. And you'll have to douse the lights so that he won't be able to see and fight back more effectively. It's frequently easier--and smarter--to just walk away than to kill.

In short, this is a game player's game. Once you've been wowed by all the things your computer can do, once you've seen all the pretty new games, once you've shot down your first million starships, THIS is the game you settle into for the long haul.

Be warned, though: "Thief" is so wholly satisfying, it will rob you of the ability to enjoy 90 percent of the games on the market.

no need to hyperventilate
when i bought my windows gamebox about a year ago, one of the first things i got was "thief bundle", which i gave a five star rating. however, one of my gripes was that the gold version did not come with it, and i wanted to get this after reading websites. finally, i got it through amazon, new and at a very cheap price!

there are 3 extra levels in this game. in thief 1, you need four stones to get into a cathedral; you find these in two levels, two stones per level. in the gold version, each stone is found in its own level. the first level, thieves guild, is long and has little to do with the story. its a good level anyway, with the creepiness thief 1 is known for. however, the mage towers is a repetitive and somewhat tedious level, while song of the caverns is the exploration of an opera house that is also rather tedious. basically, its like citibank, but not as good.

so...i realize that most thief fans will want the gold to have the complete set, but, in itself, the gold is not really worth hyperventilating over. however, it still is thief 1, which, old, gold, or whatever, is still the scariest and one of the best games ever made for computer.
