There's Something About Mary is one of the funniest movies in years, recalling the days of the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker movies, in which (often tasteless) gags were piled on at a fierce rate. The difference is that cowriters and codirectors Bobby and Peter Farrelly have also crafted a credible story line and even tossed in some genuine emotional content.

The Farrelly brothers' first two movies, Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, had some moments of uproarious raunch, but were uneven. With Mary, they've created a consistently hilarious romantic comedy, made all the funnier by the fact that you know that they know that some of their gags go way over the line.

Cameron Diaz stars as Mary, every guy's ideal. Ben Stiller plays a high-school suitor still hung up on Mary years later; the obstacles standing between him and her include a number of psychotic suitors, a miserable little pooch, and, oh yeah, a murder charge.

The Farrellys' admittedly simplistic camera work, which adapts easily to a TV screen, and the fact that you'll likely laugh yourself so silly over certain scenes you'll want to replay them to see what you were missing while you were busy convulsing, make this a perfect video movie. --David Kronke

Customer Reviews of There's Something About Mary (Special Edition)

There's something about "There's Something About Mary"
First of all, I can't believe the average customer rating is 3 and a half stars while ridiculous movies like Bring it On and Drop Dead Gorgeous are frozen at a solid 4.

This movie is beyond hilarious. The entire supporting cast is brilliant. Chris Elliot, Keith David (Mary's dad, who is WAY too funny in this movie), Harland Williams, Tucker and Matt Dillon are perfect. There's few movies funnier than TSAM. Seems like people nowadays lack a decent sense of humor.

I'll admit, some scenes were too immature and stupid for me to laugh at. The dog on speed, the hair-gel scene, and a few others are just too goofy. As far as humor goes, (for me at least) it's all about verbal delivery. Like Chris Elliot in the last scene. He nails every line. The way he says the lines, the look on his face.... I mean, his facial expressions have me busting a gut everytime I watch the damn movie.

Slapstick humor is played out and boring. These actors have comedic presence. They do everything right. They don't rely on jumping around like Gumby to get a few cheap laughs. Take Mary's dad for example. The guy's funny without even trying. His damn smile alone has me rolling. His timing and delivery is right on the money. Amazing talent. All of the supporting cast is just pure class.

To summerize, TSAM is a refreshing comedy that actually makes you laugh. Not a lot of comedies nowadays do that. This one sure does. Even if you've seen it dozens of times. Pure hilarity. And my opinion is the one that counts. Don't listen to these other 1-star morons.

Raunchy, Sweet, & Funny--A Winning Combo
Just about the time a character mistakes a certain body fluid for hair gel and decides a little dab will do her, this movie gels. The joke is rude and gross, but it's also funny. Real funny.

Rather than taking a stand for good taste and propriety, viewers will be better off surrendering to the outrageous mixture of full-tilt zaniness, ribaldry and freewheeling bonhomie in There's Something About Mary, a romantic comedy with its heart in the right place and its mind considerably lower.

Let's just put it this way: The movie's two best sight gags, including the one above, can't be described fully in a family publication. That should surprise no one. Mary is written and directed by Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly, the skewed sibling duo whose films include the vulgar-are-us comedies Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin. Their latest offering, while more sophisticated and appealing in its plot and performances, is still definitely too crude for prudes.

At the center of Mary lies a sweet love story. Stiller, a nerdy writer, has pined for the movie's titular hero (Diaz) ever since they had a single date back in high school. That date ended disastrously when, while using the bathroom at her house, Stiller encountered zipper problems. Now, more than a decade later, he hires an investigator (Dillon) to track Diaz down.

A gleefully unscrupulous sleazeball, Dillon promptly falls for the dazzling Diaz himself and begins putting the moves on her. Hilarity, truly, ensues. The entire cast has a blast, especially Dillon, who, sporting the thinnest of pencil-thin mustaches, revels in playing a louse. The scene where he drugs and then desperately tries to revive a passed-out pooch is alone worth the price. And you'll find yourself singing along with everyone else at the end--as the credits roll!

A let-yourself-go with it flowing, funny, farcical love story.

GREAT EXTRAS!
This funny, slapstick movie from the Farelly brothers has Ben Stiller hunting down a long lost High School love, with the usual crude gags and sharp turns along the way.

Get the widescreen 2-disc director's cut, because it's loaded with special features like gag reels, behind the scenes stuff, interviews, etc.

Rated R (contains language, semi-nudity, crude humor relating to sexual content, slapstick violence-- no blood and references to drug abuse)
