Customer Reviews of The snake has all the lines
A woman doing it all... I was nine or ten years old when my mother gave me this book to read, and it's been a favorite for more than forty years. Jean Kerr wrote wonderful, witty essays about being a wife, a mother, and a writer. Her world incorporated trips to the beach and dinners in Manhattan. She wrote about making costumes for school plays and casting Broadway plays, as though both were perfectly normal facets of a woman's life. I credit her-or blame her, depending on my mood-for making girls like me think we could do it all, and have fun while we were doing it. Kerr comments on the doldrums of daily life, but she doesn't agonize about it. And there's never any question in our minds, or in hers, that she's an intelligent, capable, sophisticated, funny human being, even when she's chasing after children or discussing the virtues (or lack thereof) of diet bread. I like this book rather better than "Please Don't Eat the Daisies"-which still isn't the angsty suburban mishmash of the Doris Day movie, and is a heckuva good read. A particular favorite is the "Can This Marriage Be Saved" version of Lolita.
Funny follow-up to Please Don't Eat the Daisies
More hilarious essays on family and theatrical life from Jean Kerr. If you enjoyed Please Don't Eat the Daisies (and if you didn't, you must be very hard to please) you will enjoy this book too. Whether she is writing about coping with children on the beach, going out of town with a show, her fear of flying, her eccentric mother, or Lolit and humbert Humbert consulting a marriage guidance councellor, she is as funny as she was in the earlier book.
