Product Description:
An "engrossing, delightful film" (The Washington Post), The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is the bonafide sleeper theatrical hit of the year. The film's endearing guide is Mark Bittner, an aging bohemian, but the supporting cast members, a rambunctious flock of urban parrots, are the true stars, and their surprisingly humanlike behavior makes for a wondrous and rare experience. The film follows the ups-and-downs of these wild birds within the green niches of San Francisco as Bittner befriends, feeds, and names the members of the flock. Along the way, we meet many unforgettable characters: among them Connor, the grouchy yet lovable outcast of the flock, crying for a mate but luckless in his pursuits, and "the lovers," Picasso and Sophie, inseparable until Sophie is forced into mourning when Picasso disappears. More than a mere birdwatcher, Bittner finds solace in his immersion with these strikingly beautiful creatures - but how will he cope when he's evicted from his sanctuary and forced to live away from the parrots? Packed with romance, comedy and a surprise ending that "makes you feel like you could fly out of the theater" (San Jose Mercury News), The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill shows just how wondrously similar the human and animal worlds really can be.

Customer Reviews of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
Quiet start, powerful finish in this heart-tugging doc... If you have an interest in San Francisco, or in birding, or in how an aging hippie survives in one of the world's most expensive places to live without a real job, this flick's for you. Have patience, and about one-third of the way through its 83 minutes, this will grab you and not let you want to let it end. So the extra features, another half-hour or so of the birds, are worth seeing too. One guy starts being kind to the parrots in his neigboring trees, and in a little more than three years they become the biggest thing in his life. Then he has to move away from them and let them fend even more for themselves. This is surprisingly emotional, and the viewer comes to care for the human hero and the personable birds quite deeply. This is a film for thinking, caring, tree-hugging, wildlife-loving folks.
LOVE ON THE WING -- WONDROUS AND SLY
The quirky love triangle involving an out of work, penniless musician, THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL (New Video Group) and a filmmaker becomes something much more than it first appears.

>This gentle Zen lesson suggests by images and story alone that letting go and becoming one with your space can bring meaning and love where none existed. Sit still, open your heart, and the universe will pour in. So don't despair when all seems lost because life itself is a thing of ineffable magic. This is a film of great charm and sly wit. I was surprised at the emotions it evoked.

For the Birds
This documentary made my wife cry. Although seemingly focused on the wild parrots that fill the trees of Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, this is really about the quiet man who's become their tender, their guardian and their most expert student. A drifter for most of his life, Mark Bittner has found purpose through his relationship with the parrots, and the scene where he describes the death of his favorite bird is heartbreaking. A surprising, warm and interesting little film.
