Allison Janney, as C. J. earned The West Wing's sole Emmy this season. One of her showcase hours is "Access," a format-breaking episode presented as a Frontline-type "day-in-the-life" documentary. Other memorable episodes that helped to right The West Wing's course include "The Supremes," featuring Glenn Close as a Supreme Court nominee; the battle-of-wills episode, "Shutdown"; "Gaza," in which Donna (Janel Moloney) is severely wounded during a fact-finding mission to the Middle East; and "Memorial Day," a flashback episode that echoes "Bartlet for America" from season 3, and which ends the season on a strong note, and almost make viewers forget the Sesame Street Muppet cameos in the episode, "Eppu Si Muove." Almost. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews of The West Wing - The Complete Fifth Season
It gets better after disc 2, but it lacks the spark of the other seasons What can I say I love west wing, but I wont be bullied by those who say this season is quality. The first 2 discs much like the bartlett administration searching for a message searching for direction, you feel the same way about John Wells, searching for a story. The dialogue just feels flat, and Leo has become a real pain in the ass, he is rude and acts very un-leo like. For the completist you gotta have it, and Season 6 is excellent, but you just feel that the starting line up missed the game on this one.
Good Stuff
I started watching The West Wing in 2004. Boy was I missing some good stuff! I travel alot and don't get to watch much TV so I've been purchasing the DVDs as they come out. I'm not super intellegent so I have to watch them over and over but each time I do, I get more and more out of them. Educational, witty and very entertaining. Good Stuff!
lifeless and stupid
I agree with the reviewer who compared this to Seinfeld dubbed in Spanish. Setting aside the loss of Sorkin's brilliant dialogue (which was for me, the main reason to watch) all of the characters had personality transplants. After 4 seasons, I felt like I knew these people, and all of a sudden aliens had taken over their bodies. The stories were another problem. Some may say that they were more focused on politics. To me the drastically shortened story arcs trivialized the purported issues and made them laughable. One of the strengths of the original show was the way story threads moved through time as they would in the real world. It gave the show continuity and life. Season 5 eliminated the continuity as if each show had a different writer who had never watched previous episodes. It should never have been produced.
