Customer Reviews of The Warriors - The Ultimate Director's Cut
AMAZING movie about New York in the late 1970's When this movie was released, it attracted such a rough crowd that fans caused riots in some theaters. <
> <
>This movie is the best! They took an old concept (it's based on a story about Greek soldiers who must fight their way back through hostile territory) and put it into a modern context. <
> <
>At the beginning, we are introduced to the Warriors, 9 young men from Coney Island who are on the train heading into the city for a 5 burrough wide gang meeting, hosted by Cyrus. We see shots of an old New York flash by, and tons of flashy, pre hip hop gangboys in all sorts of colorful outfits. <
> <
>When all the gangs get together, something goes terribly wrong and the Warriors get framed for murder. Now they have to get back home and every gang in NYC wants a piece of them. <
> <
>The strength of this movie is how it highlighted that even the toughest gang bangers could get swallowed up whole and killed by the mean streets of New York. <
> <
>Although the constant fights and the internal struggles of The Warriors serve as part of the appeal, the movie is probably best known for its villain and for its climactic ending. <
> <
>FInally, though the movie was made before hip hop had really taken the nation, snippets from this movie have been used in rap videos and quoted in hip hop lyrics in the years ever since. <
> <
>This is a great movie for anyone who wants to understand how bad things got in urban America in the 1970's or who wants to see some great character actors in early roles.

One of my all-time favorite movies
The Warriors is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. It just is, I can't explain it. It's not a literary masterpiece, but it's definitely a cinematic masterpiece. The intensity is unparallelled; there is not one moment in this movie where you can even take your eyes off the screen, much less get up and go to the bathroom. The city of New York is as much a star of this movie as any of the remarkably talented and charismatic actors. I loved this movie so much I bought the book by Sol Yurik. The book is nowhere near as intense; it appears to be a book for teens and young adults and is quite mild compared to the movie. But God bless Sol Yurik for writing the inspiration for this cinematic masterpiece. Yes, it's a little dated by today's standards; today's gangs would all be armed with automatic weapons. But that doesn't leave much room for a plotline, does it? Watch this movie; you'll be glad you did.
