Customer Reviews of The Van Halen Story: The Early Years
Another perspective The Van Halen early years are probably most important to people between the ages of say 30 to 55, and if you want to sit down and watch this DVD and talk about VH with somebody who doesn't know anything about them, you can't. Reasons being that the alien background music and the lack of proper live material makes it fake. Though, without the rookie in the room, the makers have put together something quite interesting and, a lot of hard work has gone into this. Looking at the outside of the making of this DVD. Nothing has been said about the arguments between Roth and VH after the split. The arguments about the 'best of' CD and the various court cases that have been reported over the years. Eddie Van Halen as described in this DVD is a genius and he inspired so so many players. When reports came in about his throat cancer came though, I was really upset. It is because of this guy I wanted to play guitar and I will always regard him as the Hendrix of our time. The only negative review I have for is towards the official VH camp. If only they could forgot about money for a change and just let a documentary like this be compiled. At the moment the VH Camp is selfish, just like Sammy Hagar and his avoidance of songs from the early albums when live. The people that are looking for these type of documentaries are the fans that bought the records back in the late 70's, early 80's. If the VH Camp gave just a little bit of backing, then who knows, the rookie who has never heard the VH early material might, just might, buy all the VH early stuff all over again. Now, that's money "WB". I'm giving this 5 Stars cause it's a fair attempt.
Okay, but does fall short
I picked a copy of this used and whilst some of the info is new, this falls short from what might of been. I guess you could squeeze this to about 20 minutes. The info on Mammoth was good though. From reading some of these reviews perhaps the makers should have another go. Cause the idea is good.
Desperate!
Very very disappointing. As the saying goes never judge a book by it's cover and this really is appalling. A previous review mentions that there was a review of this DVD made before it was even released. Well if thats true, then obviously the makers knew the finished article wouldn't go down that well with the fans. In any case why is it that each lousy review is followed by a really good one???? And who gives a monkeys about Mark Stone and most of the people on this DVD anyway?????! Eddie, Alex, Dave and Michael must be well piss** off with this poorly put together anthology of their early years. Perhaps Warner Brothers should take some action?
