Customer Reviews of The Unknown
Very good album I loathe Sherwood's participation in Yes. I decided to buy this one as a die hard fanatic of Chris Squire. What a nice surprise! It's quite entertainig. Good ideas (no stupid tunes like abominable 'Man on the Moon' of 'OYE'), progressively arranged (complex and interesting), skillfully played (even Sherwood is Ok most of the time) and b r i l i a n t l y produced.
I recommend it to every Yes-fan. As a Squire-maniac I regret only that his phenomenal bass is not so in front of the mix and that he is not lead singer on all of the tracks. Sherwood's vocals are Ok, vocally album is strong (harmonies are equal to Yes) in general but these are Squire's leads that are really phenomenal. Kind of sci-fi twin brother of Ozzy.
'The Unknown' is one of the best concept song for (Yes)years. I enjoy it more than best moments of 'Magnification'. And I'm hard core fan of Yes.
Note that I don't care for the lyrics though. Not being fluent in english I can luckily switch them off mentally.
Good sophomore release
While the first Conspiracy album was a collection of tracks spanning a decade, from Billy Sherwood and Chris Squire's first collaboration in 1989 until the turn of the century, The Unknown tends to be a more focused, complete album as a whole. It sounds good from a production standpoint and there are some very good songs (including "Conspiracy" and a great vocal from Squire on "1/2 a World Away".)
Lots of strange guitar and keyboard sounds in the Sherwood tradition, and Squire's bass is kickin'! Jay Schellen is very good on drums too.
One bad point is this is not a lot of music... under 50 minutes over 9 tracks.
A True Prog Rock Journey for the New Millennium
Even better than their last effort, UNKOWN, is a great cd for those of us who want more than the usual humdrum MTV driven one-hit wonders of the last decade. I think good, new progressive rock (emphasis on "good) is probably the most difficult to find these days, and being a long time original supporter and fan of the genre, I yearn for new sounds which don't necessarily bring me back, but take me forward. I think that UKNOWN is a truly commendable attempt to establish prog rock in a new millennium. It's Yes, but it's not, it's a whole new listening experience which encompasses original sounds, rhythms, and concepts, and delivers a "new" product, yet with enough of the familar trademark genius of Squire and Sherwood, to satisfy both seasoned fans and hopefully attract a fresh crop of novice listeners. The cd starts and ends at a wonderfully frantic pace of pounding beats and symphonic wonders. Thank you Chris and Billy!
