Great Special Effects without Computers!
The Towering Inferno had an unusual genesis. Two books about a high rise on fire were written, The Tower and The Glass Inferno and two different studios optioned them. But due to the cost, the studios decided to make one film. I read both books (I don't read a lot because I am dyslexic.) And both books were used equally for the film. The one dominant thing was this film would be an Irwin Allen film and a follow-up to the mega hit The Poseidon Adventure.

<
>In the late 60's and early 70's there was a proliferation high rises. The one thing was that most fire departments had no plan or ability to fight a super high rise fire. This film addressed this.
<

<
>A new super high rise has been built. But to get it completed on time and on budget, the builder's evil son-in-law has cut corners. It is opening night and all the towns' dignitaries are there. It is the first time that the building is fully functional and operating. But the circuits quickly overload and cause a fire in a storage room. The fire quickly spreads and traps the guests on the top floor restaurant. Who will survive, who will die and how!

<
>Singer Maureen McGovern appears as the singer and performs the Oscar winning song "We May Never Love Like This Again" by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn.
<
>
<
>All the performances are top notch but Fred Astaire was robbed of the Oscar for a beautiful and complex characterization.
<
>
<
>Stirling Silliphant wrote the screenplay, John Guillerman directed with producer Irwin Allen directing the "action" sequences.

<
>This is a well crafted action film that will keep you on the edge of your sofa eating buckets of popcorn. This is the perfect for a cold winter's night or a date film where you want to snuggle. Sit back and enjoy the last great disaster film.
