Customer Reviews of The Three Stooges: Woman Haters
The first Stooge short for Columbia and two classic comedies "Woman Haters" has the distinction of being the first of the Columbia shorts for which the Three Stooges are best remembered and which made their comic reputations, even more so than their six feature films. The title credit for this 1934 effort went to Marjorie White, a budding young star who died shortly after filming was completed, with the Stooges getting billing as Moe, Larry, and Curly. However, the problem with this short is that for some reason Columbia decided to do all of the dialogue in rhyming couplets. On the plus side Curly says "Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk" for the first time and his bit when he boards the train is a nice little gem, as is watch Moe and the boys make their first appearance with an impressive flourish of slaps and eye pokes. This first effort is clearly the least impressive one of the bunch, but it was the first one and that gives it some historical significance that has to be respected.
"Three Little Beers" is a 1935 short with the Stooges working for the Panther Brewing Company but being much more concerned with the golf tournament they plan to win. After causing trouble by practicing their golf swings near the beer truck, causing a key to come crashing down on the president of the company, the Stooges go off to wreck havoc on the golf course, and then return to the beer truck to find a way of losing the rest of the beer barrels. This one is way better than the first one, but the best is yet to come.
"Tassels in the Air" comes from 1938 and has the Stooges as painters. The premise is that Omay, a famous interior director, has opened an office in town and a wealthy woman nags her husband to have their house decorated so they can move up in society. Meanwhile, assigned the simple task of putting stencils on the doors in Omay's office, the boys mess up so that when the woman arrives she thinks their closet is the office of the great decorator, whom she assumes to be Moe. The Stooges jump at the decorating job, which means they arrive at the woman's house and start painting the furniture. Not a lot of slaps or eye pokes in this one, but "Tassels in the Air" shows the Stooges could engage in physical comedy with their trademark violent slapstick.
A weak short, and two excellent shorts.
WOMAN HATERS is the first Three Stooges film made at Columbia. This, however is a bad start for the Stooges. The whole short is done in rhyme. I've never liked Three Stooges shorts that have background music, but it really takes the cake here. Every second of this short has background music, which really wasn't necessary. Columbia must've spent a fortune writing this entire script in rhyme. Every Stooge fan should avoid this film.
THREE LITTLE BEERS, on the other hand, was extremely funny. There are just too many funny scenes. A must-see.
TASSELS IN THE AIR is a very funny short, especially when the Stooges are speaking in pig latin. "Boy are you Umbday!" A very funny short, with tons of memorable moments.
The tape starts out bumpy, but gets much funnier.
Somewhat of a suprising debut.
This is a cool stooge short. I would not want to be in Larry's shoes in this episode. I was suprised at how young they looked. This film was completely said in rhyme or sung. I was suprised to find out Moe did not give the first eyepoke. This is the first of 97 stooge shorts Curly would be in before he would have a stroke in 1947. Three Little Beers is a classic stooge short. My favorite scene is when Larry is up in a tree. A barrel hits a rock and bounces up into the tree. It hits Larry and he goes flying into a pile of cement.
