Customer Reviews of The Thing (Collector's Edition)
A Chilling Setting and Premise for a Film, One of Carpenter's Masterpieces Rarely to remakes improve upon the original or do the (impossible to some viewers) give a decent reinterpretation of the original story without trying to usurp the original ("Batman Begins" is a classic example of this). However John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a remake of a 1951 horror classic that came out (unlike what some viewer said) at the wrong time, as the film met with little success in the box office. <

>Set in Antarctica, the film follows a station of American scientists who fall into the remains of a Norweigan science expedition whom have all fallen prey to some alien (some THING) frozen in the ice that eliminated their entire team by mimicking anyone (or anything as we see even animal life isn't immune to this creature) exactly, down to the smallest detail and personality quirk. Mac (Kurt Russel) is the team's helicopter pilot and films main character as we follow the teams slow attempts to find this creature and stop it. The film definitely gorey. It's also definitely intense on the character interactions as each of the team has their own personality and own endurances and we watch as one by one the team is elminated. Not by the alien life form itself but, in a stroke of story brilliance; by other team memebers as it's revealed the alien life form itself has imitated them and completely replaced them, without the team (or the viewer) even knowing it. <

>Kurt Russell is an everyman kind of character if a bit of a loner, while Keith David plays a good counter part to Russell as a more slightly volatile character as each encounter with the creature brings the teams numbers down to an at once subdued and intense and magnisifscent climax that really draws the film together. <

>While the special effects are a bit out of date (and the computer technology, when compared with now a days is completely laughable) the script is well written and as said the intereactions of the characters and the paranoia of the team as the alien life form encounters them is a great example of character driven interactions. <

>There is only one problem for the film and that is sadly, it's slower pace which may put all but the most attentive viewer to nodding. At two hours and thirty five minutes long the film isn't a fast pace thriller by any means but is instead filled with intense bursts of surprises that all lead up to that brilliant conclusion that really tie the film together. "The Thing" could be billed as sci-fi and horror and works well for either category and is reccomended for fans of both (with strong stomachs, mind).
John Carpenter's "The Thing"
"The Thing" is about a scientific research team in Antartica who are bombarded by a shape-shifting alien that can disguise itself as it's victim. One by one they are picked off and the team soon realises that they don't know who may already have been taken over. "The Thing" is easily Carpenter's best film (but my favorite is "Escape From New York") and most certainly one of the best horror films of all time. Recommended to all John Carpenter fans, sci-fi fans, and horror film fans.
The Best !!!
