Customer Reviews of The Terminator (Special Edition)
This movie causes my skin crawl... If there was an Oscar for the Best Story, I am sure The Terminator would have won it. James Cameron brings on the screen his dark vision of a post-apocalyptic world dominated by man's own technological creations. The most powerful computer on Earth, SkyNet, that is in control of United States nuclear arsenal, becomes intelligent and almost exterminates humanity by initiating a nuclear war. That's a story! The film does not take place in the hellish future, but in the year 1984, where the "final" battle between humans and machines "will" take place: Sarah Connor, a seemingly innocent woman, becomes the target for a deadly cyborg sent back through time by SkyNet to kill her. Turns out she is about to give birth to a man, John Connor, who will eventually lead humans into a victory over the evil computer. Kyle Reese, a soldier under John Connor's command, is sent to protect Sarah. What follows is a fight for hope, for the future of humanity. As the story unfolds, Kyle reveals to Sarah the history of things to come. Sarah is reluctant to believe him first, but eventually falls in love with Kyle. Meanwhile, the terminator lurks and leaves behind a grim path of destruction... The only movie that can rival Terminator's dark atmosphere is probably Batman, but while Batman lacks any kind of deeper meaning, The Terminator tells a story that can very well happen; perhaps we have too much trust in computers...
Unstoppable Killing Machine -- Original Tech Noir
5 Stars for originality, story, effects and action! The DVD is solid too, with a fair amount of extras.
Some of you may remember when we all feared the Ruskies would nuke us any day -- this film capitalized on that fear and introduced us all to a new terror -- the evils of machines rising up against mankind. Plot revolves around deadly battle/chase to stop a cyborg sent back thru time. Many other reviewers will relate every detail, but I suggest you watch the movie. Keep in mind this was the one that started it, before the matrix and all the others. Film has a dark tone that is compelling. Lots of action, weapons, and some Sci-Fi but not too much. Man vs his creation in a sci-fi tech nightmare. That theme has since been redone several times since in many ways. The Terminator set the bar for Tech Noir films, and is the best of the series of three (T2 Judgement Day and T3 Rise of the Machines). Ironic that after all the Hollywood destruction now the Terminator "runs" California. . . Rise of the Machine? This movie is the role that defined Schwarzenagger's career more than any other. See the DVD and you'll know what I mean.
The Special Edition Terminator DVD is worth the price! Quality of sound and video is excellent, bearing in mind that it is almost 20 years old now. Effects are awesome for the 80's. But Cameron's original Terminator was made without a major budget, and before Arnold was a big star. Still they pulled it off nicely! Not as much as later version, but the Extras (artwork, trailers, deleted scenes, & a sort of screenplay) on this DVD are worthy of the $15 price. I just watched it again, go get yours. This version (special ed) is worthy of a place in your collection too, although a boxed set may be coming out with all three sometime.
A Humble Question
I can't say anything more than other viewers have, about what a superlative movie this was. However, let's think for a moment about Sarah Conner's roommate Ginger and her boyfriend, both of whom were murdered by The Terminator.
Ginger was constantly listening to music on her earphones (which prevented her from hearing The Terminator kill her boyfriend). Ginger had her headphones on, listening to wild rock music, even while she and her dude were in bed making love. I have to ask, how many WOMEN would tolerate such a circumstance, if a boyfriend came over and made love while listening to music on his headphones? If, like Ginger, some dude were rocking to the beat of some band on his headphones while engaging in intimate congress, how many women would feel genuine consideration from her lover at that point? How could this guy maintain any respect at all for Ginger, if she considers the headphone music equally important to his advances? (Yeah yeah yeah yeah, It's A Mistake etc etc.)
The Terminator was a great movie. And, Ginger's boyfriend was a total CHUMP... Ginger listening to her radio and so forth, while he's doing the deed with her. Just try it sometime, listening to music on your headphones while being intimate with someone else. That doesn't really fly, in the real world.
