Customer Reviews of The Suffering
Almost...but no cigar! My thoughts on this game is that the game isnt truly that scary to be honest. The only "true scare" would be the "flashbacks" that Torque has through out the game, which, i can understand because it catches you off guard.
The good thing about this game, is that you have at least enough ammo and guns and medicine to live, which is good, because some games dont offer that. The game has cool graphics and not to sloppy controls at times. However, this game does have very poor camera angles that makes it hard to hit your target at times. It has good gameplay, a nice odd story line and its bloody (which now kids today are going for). However, it is refreshing that there are no "zombies" which is true, but, the game with no "scare" cannot be in the same section as say Resident Evil or Silent Hill.
The creatures to where somewhat lame. For example, here are my veiws on the creatures:
1. Horace- sometimes helpful..but only towards the middle of the game
2. Hermes - Very cool villian
3. Dr. Killjoy- "Killjoy"?..what a stupid name for a villian
4. Inferna- Very cool creature, but can be a pain in the butt to kill
5. Fester- Lame creature, it looks like they "rip it off" from another game
6. Burrower- Another lame creature, but, tough to kill at times.
7. Nooseman- Very, very lame creature..why didnt they just call it "Spiderman"?
8. Mainliner- Very hard and very fustrating creature to kill.
9. Marksman- Very cool creature and are very easy to kill.
10. Slayer- Very lame, very boring, easy kills.
11. Torque- Why does he look like Wolverine???
Anyways those are my veiws on the game. If you want the game i would rent it first, if you like, then buy it. To Midway, almost..but no cigar!.
Great action horror. Surprise game of the year so far.
In an earlier review, I bashed this game saying it was just another survival horror wannabe like Fatal Frame and Clock Tower 3. Yeah I'm the guy who said stick with Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Well I take it all back, now I feel like a moron. I guess that's what happends when you judge a game before playing it.
The Suffering actually does evolve survival horror into a more action shooter based horror. The horror concept is also pretty original with a combinatin of gore, ghosts, and deformed creatures. Typical scary stuff, but the game is also disturbing in a rude and more thuggish manner with even some humor thrown in. Earlier Rockstar Games released Manhunt a game that was labeled as Resident Evil or survival horror for Grand Theft Auto fans and I think this game to can go under that catergory. It's better than RE: Outbreak, Fatal Frame 2, probably even Silent Hill 3, but Silent Hill is my cult favorite.
As far as the graphics and gameplay, it's very solid with a surprisly smooth control and feel to it. It's like Max Payne but 100 times smoother. Graphics are also impressive with awesome lighting effects. Sound is impressive, and despite what you'll hear from reviews the voice acting is very good and very funny, falls in right with the tone of the game.
How does the game compare to other horror games as far as scare factor? Well this is more of an action horror,so you should think more along the lines of Doom or something. It's not quite in the level of Silent Hill or Fatal Frame but it's got a very disturbing yet a bit humorous thuggish feel to it. The game also has some good extras like a behind the scenes look at the making of the game, along with a very good movie on the history of some of the worst and most barbaric prisons and methods of torture ever. This game really brings prison hell to life, it's the surprise of the year for me s far.
Best Horror Game Ever!
With a mix of suspense and mystery solving, The Suffering is easily the best horror game I have ever played! The story line was great and the action was endless! There was a lot of profanity though...definately not a game for younger people. It is, in a word, engulfing.
