Customer Reviews of Sporting News
An old timer's complaint I have subscribed to The Sporting News (TSN) since the early 1960s. It was somewhat baroquely written under the leadership of the Spink family then (titles for articles on baseball featured terms such as "the hot corner," "keystone combo," "gateway," "pickets," "hurlers" etc.--kind of over the top). But I yearn for some of those old time touches. <

>First, some reviewers note the great statistics. Nonsense. This publication needs MORE statistics of the traditional type--league leaders, etc. I'd like to see more NBA, NFL, MLB, etc. stats of the traditional sort. These simply are not published nearly enough. Sports are about statistics and TSN does not have enough for real sports fanatics. <

>Second, I wish that the publisher included an obituary section as the old TSN featured. Once upon a time, we had a sense when sports figures died, could remember them from our earlier days, and quietly celebrate their contributions (whether large or small). <
> <
>Third, I do think that it is a plus that this is no longer "The Bible of Baseball"; TSN has become a more general sports publication, and that is to the good. But, it has become something like what folks said about the Platte River many years ago: "A mile wide, an inch deep, too thin to plow, and too thick to drink." It covers so much that there is little depth. <

>So, I continue to subscribe, but this has become the "USA Today" of sports publications (maybe to be called "McSports" as opposed to USA Today being called "McPaper") and, in my humble opinion, has done a disservice to avid sports fans in the process. Nonetheless, TSN is still worthwhile, in its providing news across many different sports to readers. But it could be so much better with a little tweaking!
You Can't Handle The Truth
If you are looking for more opinion than straight reporting and stats rather than highlights, TSN is your sports magazine.

>Years back, TSN was seemingly slated to go the way of Sport magazine; one that couldn't find a niche in the Internet and cable era, which ultimately would spell its demise. It also took TSN to take a body blow from USA Today - when its Baseball Weekly cut into readership - and overhand rights by ESPN the Magazine to find its way. TSN is truly a survivor.

>The in-season reporting is not based on editor's deciding what's hot. Those seeking out quick hits - for example - on auto racing don't have to wait for the Indy 500 or the NASCAR Chase for information.

>My biggest criticism is the reliance on lists - the best of, the worst of, etc. - that tend to become major stories when certain sports are ready to crank up for the year. Granted, many radio-talkers will pick up on the lists - and oftentimes give the compilers time to gab about it - but these features ultimately fall into a "lazy week" of gathering news.

>Overall, though, TSN is better than ever and has a product that any sports fan would find informative.
They didn't follow through with subscription
We paid for a 12 month subscription and I got the magazine for about 4 months. I couldn't get anyone to answer why it stopped and basically they just took my money. I didn't get a 12 month subscription. I got ripped off.

>Plus when I did get the issues they are very poor paper quality and the covers and some of the pages were always ripped and bent up. Very disapointing....
