Facing an indeterminate sentence of weeks/months/years until new episodes, fans of The Sopranos are advised to take the fifth; season, that is. At this point, superlatives don't do The Sopranos justice, but justice was at last served to this benchmark series. James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano in a not-so-nice mood | For the first time, The Sopranos rubbed out The West Wing to take home its first Emmy® for Outstanding Dramatic Series. Michael Imperioli and Drea de Matteo also earned Best Supporting Actor and Actress honors for some of their finest hours as Christopher and Adriana. From the moment a wayward bear lumbers into the Sopranos' yard in the season opener, it is clear that The Sopranos is in anything but a "stagmire." The series benefits from an infusion of new blood, the so-called "Class of 2004," imprisoned "family" members freshly released from jail. Most notable among these is Tony's cousin, Tony Blundetto (Steve Buscemi, who directed the pivotal season three episode "Pine Barrens"! ), who initially wants to go straight, but proves himself to be something of a "free agent," setting up a climactic stand-off between Tony and New York boss Johnny Sack. Carmela and Tony | These 13 mostly riveting episodes unfold with a page-turning intensity with many rich subplots. Estranged couple Tony and Carmela (the incomparable James Gandolfini and Edie Falco) work toward a reconciliation (greased by Tony's purchase of a $600,000 piece of property for Carmela to develop). The Feds lean harder on an increasingly stressed-out and distraught Adriana to "snitch" with inevitable results. This season's hot-button episode is "The Test Dream," in which Tony is visited by some of the series' dear, and not-so-dearly, departed in a harrowing nightmare. With this set, fans can enjoy marathon viewings of an especially satisfying season, but considering the long wait ahead for season six, best to take Tony's advice to his son, who, at one point, gulps down a champagne toast. "Slow down," Tony says. "You're supposed to savor it." --Donald Liebenson Explore More For an even deeper immersion into the world of crime (movies, that is) see our guides to crime classics and our who's who compendium of famous mob bosses. Customer Review of The Sopranos - The Complete Fifth Season
The legend continues . . . Season Five of HBO's high-water mark, "The Sopranos," builds on the foundation of the previous four seasons and takes the saga of New Jersey's favorite crime family to new heights. Tony may be running t'ings, but in Season Five he begins to lose his battle for his soul.
< >
< >Season Four ended with a surprise, as Carmela booted Tony out of her beloved McMansion. Season Five opens with a different kind of bear frolicking in the back yard - an actual black bear. This kind of subplot would be ridiculous if used by lesser writers, but David Chase and his team make it work. As they make everything in Season Five work to the story's advantage.
< >
< >A series like the "Sopranos" that has such a high body count needs a constant infusion of new blood. Season Five gets an infusion when a bunch of hoods pinched back in the '80s gets paroled, including Tony Blundetto (Steve Buscemi, hitting heights only surpassed in his work with Joel and Ethan Coen), Tony Soprano's cousin. These new arrivals exacerbate some simmering tensions between Tony's Jersey crew and the New York family, which has been thrown into chaos by the death of Carmine, Sr. Johnny Sack and Little Carmine want to take the helm, and Tony S. wants to sit on the sidelines, only that doesn't sit well with either faction from the Big Apple.
< >
< >Also straining things for Tony are Carmela's attempts to forge a new life for herself, A.J.'s continuing underachievement, Chris's heroin addiction, and Adriana's continuing "relationship" with the FBI. Meadow meets another love-of-her-life, who discovers some surprising secrets about the harsh life of the Mafia. Dr. Melfi continues to occupy Tony's mind, but their relationship is beginning to grow strained. And Uncle Junior descends further into cancer and dotage.
< >
< >Most of us would collapse under the strain of so many burdens, but Tony soldiers on as best he can. But it's clear by the end of the last episode that a part of Tony has been sacrificed to his ambition. In past seasons, we may have wanted to give this murderous thug a bear-hug in spite of his sins. By the end of Season Five, we just want to buy him a drink . . . and sit at the other end of the bar, safely out of his reach.

< >A wonderful series continues to get better and better. Avoid spoilers if you can!
Sopranos...5th season! The Sopranos just keeps getting better and better!!!! Gangland TV has never been this good!
powerful suprising season This season was a balanced treatment of the personal and 'professional' families. I was annoyed with the focus on Tony B. as I didn't find that storyline as interesting (until the end). However, the Tony/Carmela interactions were great as were the Christopher/Adriana scenes. Tony and Johnnie Sacks are, as always, fun to watch together.
