Nice product, but it didn't do everything I wanted
Before purchasing TheSky 6 Professional Edition, I sent an email over to tech. support at Bisque Software. What I wanted to determine is whether I could script the software to automatically calculate certain ephemerides for each day. In particular, I asked whether, instead of calculating sunset for each day, I could calculate when the sun's declination would reach 6 degrees each day, because that is about the time that one can start doing useful stargazing. I was told that I could do this with the professional edition. <

>Then, upon receiving the software, I could not get it to do this. I then sent another email to tech. support and they told me that it really can't be done. One can calculate the declination second by second for a specific day and then find the second when the sun reaches 6 degrees of declination, but then the person has to do this for each day of the year, so it is a very long and drawn out process, that ends up being mostly manual searching and a lot of brute-force calculations that require a great deal of time. I could already do this with free software, so it was a bit of a disappointment. <

>The software is very usable, though, and has a lot of nice features and is really some of the finest astronomical software I have ever seen. It is very scriptable, but just not in a few ways that I really wanted. I don't know if it is worth all the extra money, because it doesn't do that much more than a lot of the less expensive pieces of software, but there are a few situations where the extra features do come in handy.
