One of the hallmark seasons of The Simpsons, season 7 features some of the strongest episodes produced during the show’s run. Considering that this is The Simpsons we’re talking about here, that’s saying a lot, but this collection deserves the accolades.

Broadcast in 1995, season seven features several signature episodes, including Part II of "Who Shot Mr. Burns," "Bart Sells His Soul," and "Two Bad Neighbors" where former President George Herbert Walker Bush moves into the neighborhood (an episode gamely playing on the former President’s open dislike for the show). One of The Simpsons’s most definitive episodes, "Treehouse of Horror VI" famously broke the third wall by using the then-groundbreaking CGI technology to render Homer first in a 3-D world, then in real life, (despite the evolution in his form, he naturally ends up in an erotic cake shop). As the producers openly note on the commentary, it was a big deal at the time, and super expensive, which is why they could only do a few minutes of footage in CGI (some fans will particularly enjoy the revealing commentary on this one, as the producers explain the many visual puns and math jokes appearing in the background of the 3-D world). It’s a great example of how The Simpsons continued to play with its visual style and take creative risks years into its run. In fact, one of the best episodes on this collection, "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular" proves just how far the look and style of the show really came during that time. Hosted by actor Troy McClure (voiced by the late comic great Phil Hartman), it presents never-before-seen outtakes and original footage from the show’s debut days on The Tracey Ullman Show, while taking a few self-referential digs at show creators Matt Groening, James Brooks, and Sam Simon. Other gems include "Homerpalooza" where Homer thanks guests The Smashing Pumpkins for their gloomy music because it has made his kids "stop wishing for a future I can’t possibly provide," and "Bart the Fink" where Bart inadvertently gets Krusty the Klown busted for tax "avoision."

Along with the 25 episodes there are extensive commentaries, featurettes, and deleted scenes all of which add immense value to the set and will give die-hard fans another excuse to spend more hours in front of the TV. It’s another benchmark collection from a show that, up to this point, doesn’t seem to know its own limits. --Dan Vancini

Customer Reviews of The Simpsons - The Complete Seventh Season (Collectible Marge Head Pack)

At the top of their game on Season Seven
Every Simpsons fan has a favorite, hallmark season where the show peaked (and probably never returned to, or is ever likely to again), and mine is definitely season 7. A lifelong fan of the show, I feel that the writing and animation styles reached the fever pitch of cleverness, subversiveness, and plain old Simpsonian style in this season, and declined shortly thereafter. However the show may have suffered in recent seasons, it's runs like this, from 1995-96, that remind me why this show will always have a stranglehold on my own lexicion of pop culture references and in-jokes. <

>The highlight episodes in this season are hard for me to narrow down, but here are the ones that stand out in my mind. "Marge Be Not Proud", "Bart Sells His Soul", "Home Sweet Homediddly-dum-doodily", "Summer of 4 Ft. 2", "A Fish Called Selma", all classics. My personal favorite episode of all time, the guest-star studded "Homerpalooza" is the penultimate episode in this collection. Even the clipshow is funny! There are episodes on this season that I have watched literally a dozen times or more and still laugh at all the jokes time and again. I should also point out that this season is well-written enough not to rely on my own sentimentality to force nostalgic chuckles...I laugh because the jokes are still funny NOW, not just because they were when I was in fifth grade when the episodes premiered. <

>I must confess that although I own all the seasons currently released on DVD, I very rarely take advantage of the special features or the writer commentary tracks. I have no reason to suggest that these extras are any better or worse than you'd expect from previous or follow-up seasons. For me, the fact that 25 episodes this great are compiled in one place is worth the price of entry. I don't pay attention to the goodies, I definitely am not one to bitch about the plastic packaging...I just know that every disc on this season is guaranteed to make me laugh from start to finish. What else do you expect from a comedy? <

>Bottom line time. For many fans, the 'peak' years of the show arguably lasted from Season 3 through Season 7 or 8. For me, the best episodes are surely toward the end of that run, and Season 7 stands as the undeniable summit for the show's still ongoing output. This is a must-own for collectors or even casual fans, and if I found out a friend had never seen the show before (such phillistines do exist, it's true), I'd probably start with the cream of the crop from this season and work my way backwards. I know this review is a little on the boisterous side, but what can I say...it's the Simpsons. Can't recommend this enough.

Dedicated To: Lester & Eliza, For Making All This Possible.
By far this is the best season of "The Simpsons" on DVD. This season is full of some of the most funny and fast paced episodes yet. There are alot of things in this season that make it one of the best, like the answer to who shot Mr. Burns, Bart trys out for Fallout boy, but Milhouse gets the part instead. The kids get taken away from Homer & Marge, after they take a break from being parents. Bart sells his soul to Milhouse, only to want it back after not laughing at funny things anymore. Lisa becomes a Vegetarian after she visits a baby Lamb at the local Zoo. Homer & Bart become 3-D cartoons in "Treehouse Of Horror VI (6)". Homer gets fat so he can get disability, he also meets his mother after 27 years after leaving him and her husband Grandpa Simpson, for reasons that involve Mr. Burns. Sideshow Bob threatens Springfield with a nuclear bomb after escaping from the police on a Army base. Bart steals a video game called "Blood Storm", Krusty get indicted and then fakes his death to get out of it. Homer becomes Mr. Burns assistant for a while, until Mr. Smithers comes back from his vacation. Lester and Eliza are introduced by saving the cartoon "Itchy & Scratchy". Selma gets married again, but this time not to Sideshow Bob, but to actor Troy McClure. Bart, Milhouse, Martin & Nelson go on a trip without their parents knowing. Apu becomes a American citizen legally and Lisa makes friends at the beach while on a summer vacation. <
