Customer Reviews of The Silat PD X System
sorry that this is not very good There are very few videos about silat out on the market, and even fewer good videos about silat. I was really disappointed with this video.
It opens with Guru Yana sitting in a half lotus talking about silat. He is somewhat difficult to understand, his accent is very thick. Basically he says 3 things that he repeats over and over and over again verbatim. It's not like he says 3 things in differnt ways - it's the asme three things. 5 minutes of video feels like an hour. I fast forwarded.
Next is Guru Yana perfoming some kind of juru (form). This is pleasant to watch and Guru Yana is undoubtedly very athletic.
Then he demonstrates 3 or 4 techniques against attacks by his students which are absolutely horrible. First the students start off in these bizarre starting postures that look like flamenco dancing and start way out of range. Their attacks are slow and uncomitted. Even a rank beginner with a couple of Tae bo tapes could have beaten them.
But Guru Yana's responses are not fluid, in fact are kind of clumsy - even though he knows exactly how the student is about to attack. He struggles on tape with a takedown on one of his larger students (I would have edited it out if I were him).
Mostly he stays right on the line of attack and uses relatively complex body motions to block (ouch) or grab a kicking leg that his student isn't even aiming at him. That is not going to work in a real attack.
If Guru Yana and his students want to get better they need to really punch and kick at eachother. I assure you - anybody can deflect a kick that is aimed 2 feet away from them.
I give him credit for his finishing moves - they are excellent. And some of the pressing points demonstrated are interesting (hence the second star).
I couldn't bring myself to finish the video. I was really looking forward to more insight into gunting (scissoring movements) that are in Silat and Kali - but it just wasn't there.
An very good introduction...
Although the production quality of this video is less than perfect, it offers a lot of good information about silat. The instructor is an accomplished martial artist and author (See the secret of silat tiger [a children's book]). In the video his students are less than perfect, which made me feel like I could do the movements (Unlike many of the slickly produced, extensively choreographed instructional videos on the market today). I think it was a brilliant and brave decision to put ordinary people in the video so that everyone can appreciate the art.
My money and time were wasted...
Unrealistic attacks. Bad forms (one practitioner in the video...one of the students...did a good form however...) in general. The attacks that are being defended against are open-handed "Blade" attacks that they probably use, but are NOT the kind of attacks you would encounter in ANY normal situation and are easily countered. The teacher's defenses are off-balance most of the time, and his holds/locks are not re-enforced (ala a figure-4) and would require physical strength to make work. In short, this is a sad video, and a VERY sad representation of authentic (ie: non-watered down for competition) Silat.
