A mixed bag that received mixed reviews when released in 1994, this lavish film works overtime to honor the spirit and style of the vintage pulp novels and radio shows that made The Shadow a household name in the 1930s and '40s. Alec Baldwin plays the Shadow, a.k.a. Lamont Cranston, who arrives in New York from his decadent life in Tibet, fully reformed and disciplined in his ability "to cloud men's minds." A crime fighter who lurks in the dark recesses of the city, the Shadow faces his most deadly challenge when Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last surviving descendant of Genghis Khan, hatches a plot to conquer the world. The scheme involves a madman (Tim Curry), a hapless scientist (Ian McKellen), and various traps designed to catch and kill the Shadow, who must also contend with his blossoming romance with Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller), a slender beauty capable of a little mind play of her own. The movie's art deco production design turns out to be a scene-stealer when the plot drags, and in the title role Baldwin is never given enough good material to create a compelling character. Still, The Shadow is true to the legacy that inspired it, admirably avoiding any conspicuous compromise of its 1930s style and setting. If you can't get into the story, you're sure to be hooked by the look of the production, which is never less than dazzling. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of The Shadow

Pretty Good Movie
Watched it last night with my girlfriend. We both enjoyed it and it held our interest for the duration. I particularly liked the art deco sets, and the 1930's period way of speaking. John Lone plays a great villian. Penelope Ann Miller is stunning as Margo Lane. Alec Baldwin is pretty good as the Shadow and Cranston but I wanted a little more screen time for the Shadow. I still give it 4 stars because it is a faithful representation of the Shadow radio series which I have listened to on occasion. The DTS sound is superb. The DVD does not have anything in the way of extra features so I was let down in this respect. The DVD also should be offered in wide screen format because the movie is actually pretty good. A sequel would have been excellent, since a lot of the framework of the Shadow is set up in this movie. Too bad the studio forgot about this movie. My recommendation is to get this movie and pop a batch of popcorn and enjoy!

Fun Movie But Universal Ruined The DVD
Before a quick summation of the story, one warning: a big one for those into good visuals (as I am). Universal Studios committed the unbelievable "sin" of photographing this is 2.35:1 widescreen but only offering it on DVD in formatted-to-TV, so you miss 40 percent of the great visuals. Not only that, they zoom the picture to fill the screen so it isn't sharp, either. I hope this situation is rectified. It's a disgrace. <

>As for the story, it is a very, very hokey no-brained-but very entertaining fantasy/adventure, based on the popular radio hero of the 1930s. <
> <
>This is just pure escapism, not to be judged seriously because it's a dumb story. It's cartoon-like, an outlandish story that mixes action, comedy and a superhero with time-travel and all sorts of strange happenings. For someone who likes to gawk at the sights and sounds of the `30s and `40s, this is a fun film. Just be warned that you're not seeing all that is to be seen! <

"The Shadow knows . . .(Wicked laughter.)"
Lamont Cranston is a wealthy buisness man who just came back to Old New York City. But he didn't always use to be Lamont Cranston. In fact, he was a ruthless butcher, a drug lord and a man who would terroize china. But, when he was kidnapped to meet a master of the shadow arts, he was taught to end his wicked ways and use his master's abilities to 'cloud men's minds.' In a movie like this, it would make sense that the hero would be naturally evil before his transformation to being good. It's a new twist on the superhero genre, when you think about it. But, this movie reaches far beyond it's title and it's characters. This is a movie based on the Old Time Radio broadcasts of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Originally voiced by Orsen welles( He was the voice of Lamont Cranston and the Shadow.) and masterfully done with other voice actors. <

>Margo Lane is the apparent love interest of the shadow, but, in this movie it details how they met. It's like an origin story like BATMAN. Aside from the broadcasts, which starred many men who voiced the shadow, this is also based on some of the Pulp Comics of yesteryear. And if you ask me, Alec Baldwin was a perfect choice for this role. He has that voice that resembles the shadow's dark demeanor. <

>True, the dialogue is somewhat normal and corny at times but the true spirit of this movie lies in it's style and in it's approach to the character of the Shadow. I'm actually surprised that it did poorly at the box office but I'm sure that it's a wonderful sleeper hit. <

>But, if you want to really get into this movie you must first pick up a CD of the original Broadcasts and listen to orsen wells. They really present a mystical mood and that is the feeling you must have before watching this movie. <
> <
>When Compared to the companion movie, THE PHANTOM with Billy Zane, you have a duo collection of imortalized pulp hero's that make them both a legend. One can only hope that they release special editions of these two fine movies but regretably I don't think we'll see those 'till late 2010. Here's hoping. <
> <
>Another thing: This movie is heavy on all the elements of film noir + supernatural abilities. There are also psychic powers strewn all over. This actual resonates with a DARK CITY tone when you think about it. <
> <
>In conclusion: The movie is good if you are a sucker for film noir like me, and if you've researched it enough. <

>Enjoy!
