Customer Reviews of The Second City's 149½ Edition
Live Second City revue made for A&E - & it's great! Please be wary of another reviewer, Harold Epstein's, comments regrading this tape. Mr. Epstein must be on drugs or has never actually seen this video as none of the "SCTV Network" vets (Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, etc.) appear on this tape. However, a bunch of Second City Chicago Mainstage players from the early-mid '90s DO appear on this tape, some of whom have gone onto bigger & better things. They perform scenes live from the then-current reviews, including a parent-teacher conference regarding kindergardeners wounding themselves with handguns, a creep trying to pick up women at an abortion clinic, a wrestling match pitting Roe vs. Wade, and a man's hotel-room encounter with a woman who promises "total satisfaction." The cast includes Ron West ("Whose Line Is It Anyway?", "Third Rock From the Sun"), Steve Carell ("The Daily Show"), Jenna Jolovitz (writer for "Mad TV"), Judith Scott (who was in a company with Chris Farley, Joel Murray, & Tim Meadows), David Razowsky, Scott Allman, Jackie Hoffman ("Hairspray" on Broadway), Fran Adams, Jimmy Doyle, and Ruth Rudnick. The tape is very funny though an attempt to make some of the material more suitable visually for TV (characters speaking directly to the camera) rather than simply filming the performers on stage as if you were in the audience doesn't always work. But, as is always the case with the Second City, the cast is filled with talented, funny folk and all of the material is very smart. It's miles above much of the material found on the current season of "Saturday Night Live" or "Mad TV."
Second City's Best Cast
This stunning tour de force featuring the SCTV standards Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy and Don Holman shows why the most popular alumni (Ackroyd, Candy etc) cannot hold a candle to their lesser known successors (Martin, Thomas, Holman, Levy). Holman's performance as Mrs. Falvo's spritely elf Mr. Diabetic is a laugh riot. This Chicago high jinx is worth the extra postage I had to spend to get it from Amazon.
Thank you, Amazon, from the bottom of my heart.
