Customer Reviews of The River
My favorite Springsteen album This is a very poigniant album and one of the best albums by any artist. Springsteen is very expansive on this album, touching on many different facets of life with a minimum of pretention.
My favorite songs are "Point Blank" and "Stolen Car." Anyone who's lived through a failed relationship should be touched by these songs.
Parts of the album continue the ode to blue collar life begun in "Darkness on the Edge of Town" including rockers like "You Can Look but you Better Not Touch," "Sherry Darling," and "Out in the Streets." Then there is the heartfelt blue collar ballad, "The River," as well as the other great ballads "Fade Away" and "Independence Day."
Then you have a bunch of his best good-time, flat out fun, rocking numbers like "Ramrod," "Cadillac Ranch," "I'm a Rocker," and "Crush on You." And don't forget the top ten "Hungry Heart." Despite a variety of styles the album is a very unified whole.
This is Bruce at his best, which is to say, rock at its best. An essential CD.
Mixed Bag of Bruce
THE RIVER features Springsteen at his best and his worst. Coming on the classic heels of BORN TO RUN and DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, Springsteen was bound for a letdown, but this record is quite a confusing hodgepodge. The double set features some of Springsteen's finest songs, including "The Ties That Bind", the title cut, "Independence Day", and the stunning "Point Blank". There are numerous other serviceable tracks across a wide variety of musical stlyes (including the irresistable "Sherry Darling"). Unfortunately, this album also begins two trends that Springsteen has carried with him ever since this release: droning, socially-aware dirges (carried to fuller fruition on NEBRASKA), and generic rockers with little to no melody to speak of. It's disheartening to compare the melodic joy in older songs like "Rosalita" and "Thunder Road", and compare it to drab, tuneless rockers on this album, such as "Ramrod" and "Cadillac Ranch". This album also contains "You Can Look, But You Better Not Touch", perhaps the worst song in the Springsteen catalog, as well as the horrifically overwrought ballad "Drive All Night". There is enough good, and occasionally great, stuff here to warrant a recommendation, but THE RIVER also foreshadows the bland, repetitious nature of Springsteen's music over the last two decades.
his worst
i really like springsteen, but am not a "bruce can do no wrong" type of fan, and after listening to a borrowed copy of "the River" recently i gotta say this is his worst album. i'm glad i listened before wasting my money. if you're a new fan start with something great like Tunnel of Love which won't disappoint.
