As Harlan Ellison observes in David J. Schow's indispensable book The Outer Limits Companion, weak ratings allowed quality episodes to slip under the radar of ABC executives. Ellison's own classic teleplays--"Soldier" (which would later inspire The Terminator and subsequent legal squabbles) and "Demon with a Glass Hand"--yielded the season's finest stand-alone episodes, while the two-part "The Inheritors" (featuring the young Robert Duvall) fulfilled the series' neglected potential for longer-form plotlines. While these highlights redeem the season, "Wolf 359" (a title that would later factor in Star Trek: The Next Generation) is eerily effective despite low-tech restrictions, and "Behold Eck!" is the "best" (relatively speaking) of the tepid monster-themed shows that ABC demanded. It wasn't enough: After 17 episodes against the Saturday-night dominance of The Jackie Gleason Show, the greatest science-fiction anthology series of the 1960s was mercifully canceled, primed for phenomenal success in syndication and eventual revival as the "new" Outer Limits in 1995. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of The Outer Limits - The Original Series, Season 2
Sony corrects SNAFU: Newly Remastered April 2006 As others have said, apparently all OL OS Season 2 disks were flawed when they left the factory. In 12/05 I contacted Sony through their web site, with little hope of getting a response. Imagine my surprise when, in 5/06, a new set arrived in the mail, with a letter of apology. (Almost incredibly, the first replacement set sent by Sony was as bad as my first set; then about a week later the correct, newly remastered disks arrived, with yet another letter of apology). So take heart, you CAN watch "I, Robot" and "The Inheritors" after all. <

>I encourage owners of bad sets to contact Sony Home Entertainment at sphe_customer_service@spe.sony.com to ask for a replacement.
I happen to love the 2nd season
I've always been crazy about Outer Limits, I happen to think it was and is the best SF series ever put on television. I also think the second season had some great episodes. Soldier, The Inheritors (w/Robert Duvall), Demon with the Glass Hand, Cry of Silence, Cold Hand Warm Heart. Come on! These are great shows, well filmed, and pretty good acting. The opening to Soldier looks a lot like the openening scenes in Terminator, in fact that is why the Terminator credits mentions the work of Harlan Ellison. The building where Demon with The Glass Hand takes place happens to be the same building filmed in Blade Runner. That ought to be enough right there to get these shows if you haven't seen them already.

>I have to echo those who have complained about defective recording media and on the very same parts to which others have referred. It had trouble playing the Inheritors Part One, just like some others have posted. Must be a quality control problem. The Season One disks have played flawlessly.

>If you buy the set (and you should,) I would recommend that you immediately pop in the disk that contains The Inheritors part one and verify that one plays okay. May as well know if you're okay. Sit back and enjoy!
Defective Disk
Has anyone ever bought the second season that doesn't have a defective 2nd disk. I am on my 3rd second season set and all have had the defective disk. I can't get it to play in my Pioneer DVD player but it will play in our el cheapo Apex player. It plays the first 2 episodes fine, but the I, Robot and The Inheritors Part 1 keep freezing up or are jumpy. I know I'm not the only one who has this problem. I would just like to know where I can get the second season that works. Thanks.
