Customer Reviews of The Official 1992 NCAA Championship Video: Blue Reign
Duke gets by Kentucky, Knight and the Fab Five to repeat The victory of the Duke 71-51 over Michigan's "Fab Five" freshmen to repeat as NCAA champions was probably the most anticlimactic Final Four in history. This is because the Blue Devils had to win the greatest NCAA Tournament game ever played when Christian Laettner hit a turn around jumper at the buzzer to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats in overtime. Not even having to beat Bobby Knight's Indiana in the semi-finals seemed like a big deal after that (although the Hoosiers did manage to write "fini" to the college career of LSU's Shaquille O'Neal along the way). Facing Michigan for the championship was not a big deal since Duke had already defeated the "Fab Five" at Ann Arbor in the first television appearance for Chris Webber and company.
Everybody remember's Laettner's shot and probably that pretty much nobody missed a shot the last eight minutes of that game (as Coach K said, whoever had the last shot was going to win that game), but do you remember that it was Bobby Hurley who was the MVP of the Final Four? Grant Hill, Brain Davis, Antonio Lang, Thomas Hill, Billy McCaffrey, and Marty Clark were the other key players for Duke. Amazing what a difference a year makes; at the 1991 Final Four Duke was expected to be the appetizer for UNLV as they became the first time to win back-to-back titles since the glory days of John Wooden's UCLA Bruins and instead it was Mike Krzyzewski's team that turned the trick.
"The Official 1992 NCAA Championship Video: Blue Reign" is a necessity for any Blue Devil fan who can watch it every March when Coach K's boys try for another title, even if by now they have totally memorized Grant Hill's pass to Laettner, the catch, dribble and shoot, and Thomas Hill's stunned reaction to the ball hitting nothing but net.
Well deserved repeat
The Duke Blue Devils had, in 1991, overcome significant odds to knock off previously undefeated UNLV on their way to the title. In 1992, the big obstacle was in the regional final against Kentucky, where Christian Laettner hit a turnaround jumpshot at the buzzer for a one point win. They would get to the title game against a Michigan team led by the "Fab Five," who were all freshmen. But Jimmiy King, Jalen Rose, Ray Jackson, Juwan Howard, and the superb Chris Webber were no match for the determined Blue Devils, as Duke pulled away late for a twenty point victory and the first repeat for any team since the days of the John Wooden coached UCLA dynasty.
