The second series exceeded even the sky-high standards of the first. Indeed, it ventured beyond caricature and satire, touching on the very edge of darkness. Ricky Gervais is once again excruciatingly superb as David Brent, but in this series, Brent's to-the-camera assertions concerning his management qualities and executive capabilities are seriously challenged when the Slough and Swindon branches are merged and his former Swindon equivalent Neil (Patrick Baladi) takes over as area manager. To compensate, Brent cultivates his pathologically mistaken image of himself as an entertainer-motivator-comedian whose stage happens to be the workplace. Meanwhile, Tim, who can only maintain his sanity by teasing the priggish Gareth, continues to wrestle with his yearning for receptionist Dawn Tinsley (Lucy Davis), a sympathetic character persisting in a relationship with a man about whom she still maintains unspoken reservations. As ever, it's the awkward, reality TV-style pauses and silences, the furtive, meaningful and unmet glances across the emotional gulf of the open-plan office, that say it all here. As for Brent, his own breakdown is prefaced by a moment of hideous hilarity--an impromptu office dance, a mixture of "Flashdance and MC Hammer" as Brent describes it, but in reality bad beyond description. Then, when his fate is sealed, he at last reveals himself in a memorable finale to perhaps the greatest British sitcom, besides Fawlty Towers, ever made. All this and Keith too. --David Stubbs

Customer Reviews of The Office - The Complete First And Second Series
The Office The Office is a wonderful example of British humor. So much smarter than anything on American tv. Every time you watch it you hear and see little things you'd missed previously. The characters are so perfect, and so believable that many remind me of people I actually know! I've shared it with people at my work, and everyone loves it. It's just too bad there's only 2 seasons!!
Brilliantly biting, uncomfortable and hilarious
Set up as a fake documentary/reality tv show, The Office manages to capture humour in a way we've rarely seen before. The branch manager, David Brent, is painfully pathetic in his attempts at being funny to garner popularity. You can just feel the discomfort and awkwardness that everyone around him suffers as a result (as the camera continues to roll following his horrid jokes), and this is part of the show's brilliance - moments that make you cringe and laugh simultaneously.
Each of the main characters are so unique and well executed that there's no sense of dead weight. There are definitely some very poignant moments from time to time, and it's these rare tidbits that make you care about the characters so much. Having found so much to relate to in these stories, these DVDs are hilarious and strangely comforting - I've watched them several times over.
A side note: there were two Christmas specials that came out after the conclusion of the second season which wrap up the story quite nicely, but these are not yet available on DVD.
Simply great;-)
I'm not American and I'm not British. I've never understood to british humor, but The Office just caught me. I don't know why, it's funny and Ricky is a great actor. I really recommend this show;-)
