Customer Reviews of The Number 23 (Unrated Infinifilm Edition)
Dumb and Dumber Plot Synopsis: Jim Carrey once again tries to take on another serious role and fails yet again. <

>The movie is basically about a guy who kills a random girl, forgets about it, and then uncovers the truth in a random book that he apparently wrote before conveniently losing his memory from what should have been a fatal suicide attempt. Spoiled the film for you? Too bad... It would be best for you to spend your money elsewhere instead of wasting it on this completely incoherent and half-hearted nonsense. I have to admit that I was suckered into seeing this film because the trailer looked really intriguing. The idea behind the film was mildly interesting, too, but once again Hollywood proves that it doesn't care about insulting the intelligence of its viewers. First off, Jim Carrey seriously needs to go back to making Ace Ventura movies. If they would have casted someone like Edward Norton, who can actually play dark characters "really" well, then this film might have not been so bad.... But, in the end, Carrey is really hard to take seriously and I spent most of the film waiting for him to say "alrighty then" or to start talking out of his bum. He comes across completely dimwitted and blatantly stupid on screen as a dramatic actor and watching him attempt to play a "dark" character was laughable at best. I know he has been trying to broaden his horizons and break into dramatic acting for well over a decade now, but with portrayals such as these it seems like he is never going to go any further than comedic roles.... Another mark against this film were the annoying pseudo-softcore sex scenes that they threw at you every ten minutes or so... Only a thirteen year old boy would find these dumb scenes arousing... Throw in a little PG-13 sadomasochism and suddenly this film is supposed to be daring and extreme? It was completely unnecessary to have 23 of these scenes (pun intended) because it really weighted the film down and made it unbelievably repetitive. <

>The real tragedy is that this could have been a really cool film had it been tweaked here and there with a completely different cast in line.... Instead we have yet another Hollywood turd with a "surprise twist" and a script that sounds like it was written by a college student who thought that he was awfully clever and original. <

Pure mind-bending entertainment! Caution: This movie might make a few of you use your head...
First off, with all of the lousy reviews this movie is generating, I have got to ask this question to you all-Did we both view the same film as one another? I was absolutely amazed by this film. Granted, I will admit that I am a big Jim Carrey fan, however I don't like and enjoy all of his movies(Eternal Sunshine, The Cable Guy to name a few). But I feel he did an applaudable job with this role. I don't feel the need to tell you about the plot and synopsis of this movie, as I am sure most are already aware of the generalization of this motion picture. But with all of the negative comments I am reading from alot of people, I am just curious to what really keeps you entertained for a good 1 1/2-2 hours. Is your attention span too short to stay focused long enough to get the gist of the story? Granted, this movie might take a couple viewings to fully understand it and appreciate it(I had to rewind a few parts to pick up on the little subtleties), but it is well worth it. And the actual ending is a very nice way of closing the film, as the whole book Carey is reading(The Number 23....Duh!) is explained, and how his life is reflected in it is fully and finally understood and revealed. It's a real head scratcher at first, but is fully appreciated after you grasp the full understanding and concept of it all. Beautifully directed by Joel Schumacher, and brilliant performances by Carey and cast(who knew he could actually do anything other than comedy so naturally) make this a very memorable movie and well worth picking up. If you are still skeptical on purchasing this movie then at least do yourself a favor and rent it. I hope to see Carey casted in more films like this in the future. Very well done! You will not be disappointed!
Blah
I almost turned this one off at the halfway mark. It was really going nowhere fast and I was very bored with what was happening on screen. I don't think Carey is a bad actor, I just don't think he was able to pull off what the role required him to do. To be fair, the screenplay was lacking. The tale of a man who becomes obsessed with the number 23 after reading a book he is convinced is about his life. There was no real suspense and no great twists to the movie, so if you can make it to the end be prepared with nothing special. This one you can avoid.
