Customer Reviews of The New York Ripper
Sadistic ripper I felt sick when first saw this so called giallo masterpiece .The film isn't even close to Fulci's best films such as House by the cemetary or Beyond ,but it isn't as bad like Rome 2033 or Cat in the brain aka. Nightmare concert .The film tells about a serial killer who has disgust against "loose" women such as hookers strippers etc. To solve this problem the killer mutilates the victims in a gory scenes such as slicing victims nipples which is shown very grotesque way .The dialoque on the film is very funny though and the Donald Duck like voice of the killer is making you wonder is this suppose to be a very sick comedy or just truly bad horror flick .I would rather recommend Jess Franco's Jack the ripper or Dario Argento's Bird with a crystal plummage if you're looking for good eurothriller stuff .Picture quality of the DVD is not that great ,but still better than any other VHS version of the film .Sound is a bit bigger disappointment ,but if you are hardcore fan of Fulci or Italian giallo cinema then this DVD should be in you're DVD collection .
The Epitome of Sleaze
New York Ripper is, without a doubt, the sleaziest, seediest, most sadistic film I have ever seen, and believe me, I've seen some filth. Most likely, if you're a Fulci fan, this is one you don't want to miss. It captures the essence of Fulci's madness perfectly. Throats are slashed to ribbons, blood spurts and sprays like geysers, eyeballs are sliced, broken bottles are used inappropriately, and I haven't even mentioned the REALLY extreme stuff.
To my surprise, this Fulci feature actually has a coherent plot. Not the most complex or original plot, but a plot nonetheless. Without revealing too much, I can say that the basic structure involves a deranged killer(duh) who mutilates beautiful girls in the clasic giallo style (all we see is the killer's gloved, knife wielding hand)all over New York City. However, the reasoning behind these murders is actually very interesting, if not a bit contrived. There is also the cliche, hard-boiled, chain-smoking detective who is on the case, with the obligatory interaction between him and the murderer.
What I really like about this movie are the vintage shots of 42nd Street in New York, the seedy locals (run down hotel rooms, live sex shows, vagrant apartments, etc.), and the music, which reminds me of old-school Hill Street Blues mixed in with generic funky rhythms. The camera work is really good, and at times experimental. Often, the color schemes remind me of Dario Argento's work.
If these reasons aren't enough for you to check out this film, what if I told you that the killer quacks and talks as if he or she were a duck?
Donald Duck on a killing spree!
I simply cannot understand why Lucio Fulci has many devoted fans. So far I've seen The house by the cemetary, Manhattan baby, Zombie, City of the living dead and this one. What's good about this director? Seriously?
Commenting on this film only; It's horribly acted, plain disgusting, cheap looking, badly photographed. In fact everything about this film spells: AMATEUR.
And all of the above mentioned films by Fulci are about as good as this one.
Best of all; the scary killer makes noises like a duck when he's slaying. PLEASE!
Some of my friends keep telling me to view "Don't torture a duckling" before I brand Fulci perminantly, so I will. I hope it's better than these films.
