Customer Reviews of The New York Dog
Magazine out of business. Do not order this magazine because it is now out of business. I ordered this magazine in June and it is now October and had not received an issue. I then called the phone number listed with the magazine to find out that it is no longer being printed and the last issue was in February.
Light and fluffy; like 'Us Weekly' for dog lovers.
THE NEW YORK DOG is a light and fluffy look at the world of dogs and the people who love them. Among the features, you'll find articles on health and nutrition, dog behavior, canine couture, and celebrities and their companions. In fact, much of the focus is on celebrity: celebrity/Spot sightings; how to spoil your dog like a celeb; stories of the rich and infamous crusading for underdogs and their causes, etc. As the title implies, it's a "pet" magazine with a New Yawk spin.

>Simply put, THE NEW YORK DOG is US WEEKLY to THE BARK's VANITY FAIR: it's a fun rag, a quick read without too much substance. While the writing is capable and the stories, interesting, THE NEW YORK DOG lacks the bite of its older, more successful competitor, THE BARK. If you're in search of a more "grown-up" dog magazine - not to mention, one with a bigger heart - stick with THE BARK. On the other hand, if light and fluffy is what you crave, THE NEW YORK DOG might just be for you.

>Aside from THE NEW YORK DOG's inferiority next to THE BARK (IMHO), I do have several additional quibbles with the magazine, which is why I'm only giving it three out of five stars. The magazine is relatively thin, and at least half of its material is advertisements. And I'm not just talking about overt ads here; some articles and featurettes are poorly disguised ads for various dog-themed businesses. All in all, there's very little reading material in THE NEW YORK DOG, especially after you strip it of adverts. I understand their need for funding - especially as a new publication - but the ads are just out of hand!

>Additionally, if you purchase THE NEW YORK DOG directly from the publisher, you're likely to get a better deal. I snagged a one-year subscription to both THE NEW YORK DOG and THE HOLLYWOOD DOG (their sister pub) for a mere $20. I gave THE NEW YORK DOG subscription to my mom, who lives 1100 miles away in NY, and kept THE HOLLYWOOD DOG for myself. I went to visit her this past fall, and happened upon a few issues of THE NEW YORK DOG that she'd received. I was shocked to discover that much of the material was identical to what I'd already read in the few issues of THE HOLLYWOOD DOG that I'd gotten thus far. Exactly the same. I.e., the publisher is recycling material from one magazine to the other! Literally! Don't waste your money on both magazines.

>And if that wasn't obnoxious enough, I had a heckuva time actually getting the publisher to send me the magazines I'd paid for. I purchased the subscription around Mother's Day, and didn't get my first magazine until August. August! It took upwards of three months and half a dozen phone calls before I was finally able to get someone in their offices to drop my magazines in the mail. Because we all know that managing magazine subscriptions is exactly the same as rocket science.

I Love this Magazine - can't you publish it monthly, please!
I just love this magazine! All the specialties shops for dog items shown, I could never imagine. I enjoy the doggie scopes, cry at the obituaries and love the dog pictures. I like the picture each publication of the editor and his Boston Terrier. I read it from cover to cover. When I'm done with one issue I can't wait for the next one. Thanks for publishing such a great and informative magazine. Please consider monthly publication.
