The legend of Pocahontas and John Smith receives a luminous and essential retelling by maverick filmmaker Terrence Malick. The facts of Virginia's first white settlers, circa 1607, have been told for eons and fortified by Disney's animated films: explorer Smith (Colin Farrell) and the Native American princess (newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher) bond when the two cultures meet, a flashpoint of curiosity and war lapping interchangeably at the shores of the new continent. Malick, who took a twenty year break between his second and third films (Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line), is a master of film poetry; the film washes over you, with minimal dialogue (you see characters speak on camera for less than a quarter of the film). The rest of the words are a stream-of-consciousness narration--a technique Malick has used before but never to such degree, creating a movie you feel more than watch. The film's beauty (shot in Virginia by Emmanuel Lubezki) and production design (by Jack Fisk) seems very organic, and in fact, organic is a great label for the movie as a whole, from the dreadful conditions of early Jamestown (it makes you wonder why Englishman would want to live there) to the luminescent love story. Malick is blessed with a cast that includes Wes Studi, August Schellenberg, Christopher Plummer, and Christian Bale (who, curiously, was also in the Disney production). Fourteen-year-old Kilcher, the soul of the film, is an amazing find, and Farrell, so often tagged as the next big thing, delivers his first exceptional performance since his stunning debut in Tigerland. James Horner provides a fine score, but is overshadowed by a Mozart concerto and a recurring prelude from Wagner's Das Rheingold, a scrumptious weaving of horns fit to fuel the gentle intoxication of this film. Note: the film was initially 150 minutes, and then trimmed to 135 by Malick before the regular theatrical run. It was also the first film shot in 65mm since Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews of The New World

One of the best films of all time
The film is truly a beautiful masterpiece. Every single shot is wonderfully transfered to the screen, doing complete justice to the story. Terrence Malick is a cinematic genuis. He's one of the greatest director's of all time. You'd think that a story that's been told so many times and in so many ways, would be diminshed over time. But Malick brings a new life into the story, along with it a wonderful cast and script. <
> <
>The way the film shot is really amazing. It keeps you in awe the entire film. I've always been a fan of the way Malick does his films. It's very unique and one of a kind. <
> <
>The cast is also very good. Colin Farrell, John Smith, has the best performance of his career in the lead role. Q'Orianka Kilcher, Pocahontas, was amazing. One wonders why the Oscars ignored her performance? Christian Bale, John Rolfe, gives the best performance of the film. He really deserved a Best Supporting Oscar for this performance. The supporting cast is also excellent. It includes: Christopher Plummer, David Thewlis, August Schellenberg, and Wes Studi. <
> <
>One wonders, as I mentioned before, why this wasn't represented at the Oscars? It was completely ignored. The only nomination it got was in a minor catagory, and it didn't win. I truly don't understand the negative attitude from critics and the moviegoers. It really didn't do well in the theaters and I really think it's a shame. I think it's a beautiful and wonderful experience, that no one should miss. <

>I hope this helped you to decide on whether or not to see it. If you do decide to see it, I really hope you enjoy it.

Wasn't what I had expected
Actually The New World was beautifully filmed. I had expected it to be the same ole historical recounting of events - on teh contrary, it was organic and meserizing. For some odd reason the romantisized script added an intriguing depth. While maybe not completely factual, the film interjected soulful characterization into one of America's first romantic stories. <

>Pocahontis (I can't remember the actress' name) was luminous and enchanting. Collin Ferrall seemed a little lost, but perhaps he'd had a few late nights at the pub. Christian Bale - as always - was flawless.

Authentic and Exceedingly Beautiful...
I almost didn't see this movie because of all the bad reviews its been given. "Boring...slow...WAY too long..." blahblahblah, and a cup of tea. Well let me tell you from the bottom of my heart: putting off seeing this movie was such a mistake that I feel apologetic. <
> <
>First off, whoever says that Q'Orianka Kilcher can't act must be barking mad. At only fifteen, she IS our Pocahontas...the one that many of us have always imagined. This movie being her first major part, I was floored at how well she carried the role. She's gorgeous for her age, and in her own unique way... Just watching her carry herself (particularly with the dance-like ritual movements) was inspiring. <
>As for Colin Farrel, I enjoyed his performance as well. Though not AS unforgettable, I really loved what he did with his part and how he portrayed Captain Smith in a sort of darker sense. And Christian Bale was impeccable--spot on. <
> <
>If there's one thing that you'll fall in love with during this movie, it'll be the cinematography (which is nothing less than stunning). With enchanting shots of the natural Virgina and no artificial lighting, you feel as though you are truly experiencing what it would have been like 400 years ago. <

>I feel that the problem most people have with this movie (whether or not they realize/admit it) is that it's a lot different from the usual mainstream flicks. They took some bold moves in limiting dialogue and letting the acting and visuals take over. This might have been what made it so "boring" to some. I personally adored this decision, as it made the whole thing seem more 'real' to me. It reminded me that there was a language barrier between these two worlds and it brought me to the cliche old conclusion that 'actions speak louder than words'. And to be honest, how can you possibly place the weight and meaning of this age-old story on dialogue? Just as in real life, people don't neatly narrate everything for you. <
> <
>"Oh John, I think I'm falling in love with you!" <
>"Oh Pochi, I also think so. too." <
>"However, I am sad that you are not accepted by my people. Perhaps we should further discuss it..." <
>"Hey wait--where did you learn to speak English so well...?" <
> <
>Yeah, I'm just not seeing it. What I mean to say is that sometimes you just need to let a moment be a moment. Words aren't always the best communicators. (Though the poetic narration done by our three protagonists really brought it all together for me...^^) <
> <
>It's different, this film. There isn't "shock you out of your pants" violence and "omg drool" sex scenes. That's what people wanted, expected, and instead they got -gasp- artistic meaning and realistic, subtle acting! Not a movie at all... <
> <
>My only criticism is that the score was a bit repetitive and tended to borderline annoying during the `happy' parts. However, the minor and more `sad' songs (which filled majority of the movie) were entriely lovely and drew me in like a niffler to a shiny thing. <
> <
>All in all, The New World was moving, and I'm very glad to have seen it. PLEASE watch it for yourself--no matter what you've heard--because I'm convinced that everyone will take it in their own way. <
>It may not be for everyone, but for those of us with an attention span greater than that of a small rodent's, it's definitely worth the rental. ;)
