Customer Reviews of The Monkees - Live Summer Tour
Still Rockin' After All These Years I am a long time fan of The Monkees. I am so glad King Biscuit had the guts to release a Monkees DVD Live! This is without a doubt a great taste of what went on during the Monkees Final Tour. Of course and unfortunately without Micheal Nesmith. Regardless, Micky, Davy & Peter put on a musically sound show. Playing the hits and songs from the TV show. Some songs were cut. I wished they had kept in "Porpoise Song", "Listen To The Band" and" Since I Fell For You" which really shows off Mickys voice! It's too bad that Peter was fired after this show.
The DVD was filmed great and the audio is awesome! Better than the CD's sold at the last few years concerts. It captures the energy of the 3 and shows the real talent they have. Peter is fabulous on all the instruments played! Too bad Micky only plays drums on "Mary, Mary", he is one of the most underrated drummers! Davy does not just shake a tamborine, He is an acomplished guitarist and his voice is great! Every Monkees fan should own this!
Nice Tour Memento But Colored By Backstory
Monkees fans will make a beeline for this DVD since it's one of their few (if not the only) legit concert videos. Watching it will bring back memories of past Monkees show for many viewers. Filmed August 31, 2001 at the Sun Theatre in Anaheim, California, many fans know that this show has an interesting backstory.
This tour date was originally scheduled for August 24th but was cancelled when Micky Dolenz came down with laryngitis. After being rescheduled for August 31, the show was filmed and Peter Tork was let go from the group two days later. Many speculated that Peter would've been dropped earlier if it hadn't been for the contract to have this concert filmed. It will be hard for many Monkee fans not to think of this story as they watch this DVD.
Backstory aside, the concert was nicely filmed and has good picture quality. The camera focuses on everyone from the Monkees to the back up band, as well as the three annoying male backup dancers/musicians.
All of the standard Monkees hits are featured, although this DVD appears to not include every song that was recorded that night (use the zoom button on your DVD remote and you can see a playlist on Peter's keyboard that includes songs such as "No Time" that aren't on the DVD). The overal sound quality of the songs is excellent.
There is some bonus interview footage with all three Monkees but the quotes they give have all been heard by fans in other interviews through the years. There are also two songs that have been turned into Karaoke songs. The video footage for these songs is the same as if you were watching the concert with the sound on. The booklet doesn't offer much except for track listings and three pictures.
In a nutshell, this is a nicely-done DVD. It will be a treat for Monkee fans and will make for something fun to watch while waiting for the entire Monkees TV series to be released on DVD.
Great, but Could be better
This DVD is great, but edited! Half of the songs were left out. Because of that, King Biscuit is going to offer an EXTENDED AND UNCUT VERSION of this concert that include, well, everything!
This DVD, however, is wonderful for those not so die hard fans. Davy, Micky, and Peter are right on the mark with the songs and it's great to sing to.
