Customer Reviews of The Mists of Avalon
Mists a bit daunting at first I just finished the Mists of Avalon. This is the first book I've read by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I must say, I am not too familiar with the Arthurian lengend, so the twists in the plot were relatively surprising for me. I think in a way, this actually benefitted my experience, as I was not so much comparing and contrasting the different renditions, but simply enjoying a story with slightly familiar characters.
I found my favorite parts to be in Avalon and involving the fairy people. The fantasy parts are very descriptive and well written. The story itself seemed never to really drag.
Looking back, I don't think the author creates very likable characters. I found myself rooting for Morgaine, as is apparent that the author has a tendency to forgive Morgaine's faults.
But I gave this book 4 stars. Why? You need no familiarity with the Arthurian legend, or even any real interest in the legend to enjoy this story set in medieval times. I, unlike some reviewers, enjoyed the religious conflicts brought up, and I enjoyed the resolution at the end regarding this conflict. I suppose what makes me like this book the most though, is the realization of the goddess in me, and everywhere. I found that my set of rules regarding life tended to be more like that of Avalon than of the Christian world we live in today. I found it beautiful to read about women struggling for the same sort of things I believe in - but also let me see the other side of things.
All in all, it's a rewarding 900 page read...if a bit daunting at first. However, the beginning doesn't lack forward movement, and the story is quickly gotten into, so it's easy to keep on reading.
I do recommend this highly to most people... familiar with the Arthurian legend or not... not only was it great fun to read, but it provided some lasting images for myself...and that is the ultimate goal of reading anything.
Meet some Woman Power here...
Once started, "The Mists of Avalon" is so totally captivating it is very hard to put aside. This isn't the subject matter I would normally choose to read, however, this book was "forcibly" loaned to me and so my obligation was to read it.(lol) And, I am very glad that I did.
Having never read a King Arthur book, and not being very familiar with the history, I am glad it was Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" that filled the gap.
The magic in the story brings the Harry Potter books to mind. For example, the raising of the mist on the lake reminded me of Harry Potter and his friends boarding the train at platform 9 3/4.
Religious differences remind me of today's reality and make me wonder about what has been learned, or not learned, over the years.
There are several sexual encounters, for different motives, all which are important to the story.
The women in "The Mists of Avalon" are very strong. They have responsible and powerful roles which are dynamically presented.
From this book I learned some history, thoroughly enjoyed the magic, was reminded of ever present religious differences, saw Woman Power in action, and much more.
Best Book I've Ever Read
I won't spoil the book for any potential readers out here, but I will say one word: masterpiece. This is the crowning glory of Marion's works, and I would go so far as to say that it is the crowning glory of Arthurian literature as well! I was so absorbed in it that I finished it in a week, and it has been my absolutely most favorite book ever since!
By the way.. if you're thinking of reading any of the "Song of Ice & Fire" books by George R. R. Martin.. rethink yourself and read this series instead.. it is MUCH better and more worth your time!!!
