While Kidd places an obvious importance on the role of mysticism and legend in this tale, including the mysterious mermaid's chair at the center of the island's history, the relationships between characters is what gives this novel its true weight. Once she returns to her childhood home, Jessie is forced to confront not only her relationship with her estranged mother, but her other emotional ties as well. After decades of marriage to Hugh, her practical yet conventional husband, Jessie starts to question whether she is craving an independence she never had the chance to experience. After she meets Brother Thomas, a handsome monk who has yet to take his final vows, Jessie is forced to decide whether passion can coexist with comfort, or if the two are mutually exclusive. As her soul begins to reawaken, Jessie must also confront the circumstances of her father's death, a tragedy that continues to haunt Jessie and Nelle over thirty years later.
By boldly tackling such major themes as love, betrayal, grief, and forgiveness, The Mermaid Chair forces readers to question whether moral issues can always be interpreted in black or white. It is this ability to so gracefully present multiple sides of a story that reinforces Kidd's reputation as a well-respected modern literary voice. --Gisele Toueg

Customer Reviews of The Mermaid Chair: A Novel
Disappointing..... I was thoroughly disappointed with this novel. Secret Life of Bees is one of my favorite modern novels, so I was expecting only excellence from Kidd's second book. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I definitely shouldn't have bought the book. The plot was truly lacking in excitement and even her writing was unimpressive compared to the style of her first novel. It was totally overdone and unrealistic. I hope she gets her style back for the third novel--I'll give her another chance!
Sorry
I enjoyed Secret Life of Bees so thoroughly, I was fully expecting to read glowing reviews of Mermaid Chair, dreading to be the only one who was disappointed in Ms Monk-Kidd's second book. After reading the other reviews I retreated, not wanting to add salt to the wound but then I decided there was something I could add.

>Firstly, I absolutely intend to be a fan of this writer. No question her prose sings. She has a rare gift and no doubt she will rise above this last formulaic effort and I encourage her to do so. But it occurred to me that perhaps she needs perspective about the demographic she is writing to. Speaking for myself, I am beyond weary of gratuitous sex. This culture, in its last gasp, has sunk to regrettably new lows. Graphic sexual themes are shoved at us from all directions, in magazine ads, TV commercials, movies, music and every form of what used to be called entertainment. Add to that forcing us to watch helplessly as the values of moral behavior that has restrained society from imploding on itself are completely shredded and tossed aside.

>I don't get it. In the last two decades it seems to me that editors have been chained to a rule that demands fiction must have at least one explicit scene inserted. Have we become a society of voyeurs? Embrace [fade to black] worked beautifully through centuries of excellent literature because mature readers understand what is going on. We don't have to be hit over the head and have our noses rubbed in it. I don't like skipping pages. Monk-Kidd's talent is better than that.

>Furthermore, in an era when the numbers increase yearly of single working mothers struggling to pay the bills and keeping their kids fed, the whole "spoiled woman desperately seeking her center" is a theme that ran its coarse in the self-absorbed eighties.

>I'm sorry Kidd fell into the trap, but no question Secret Life of Bees was a hard act to follow. On the upside, I will buy and read her next book because I expect great things of this writer. Hopefully, the reviews for Mermaid Chair will be her wake-up call.
Disappointing
I was so anxious to read this book after completely loving The Secret Life of Bees, and all I can say is I was completely disappointed. It was so predictable and typical-bored housewife falls for the taboo monk....gimme a break! I felt it was forced fluff, just to put another title on the shelf. Sue can do so much better, this was a total let down.
