And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the feckless, semipsychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise--a chapter that is arguably superior to the other sci-fi smash of 1999 (you know... the one starring Jar Jar Binks). --Jeremy Storey

Reeves killed it for me I believe that if someone like Tom Cruise or Denzel Washington was the star then this would have been more compelling but Keanu Reeves is such a horrible actor and so painful to watch that it killed this movie for me. <

This is one of my favorite movies. The sequel's didn't come close. Keanu Reeves plays Neo who find out that the world we live in isn't what we think. The movie makes you think about the world we live in today.

Seen it in 1999 when it first debuted on the big screen. Couldn't take it out of my head for a week or so. Since then I rewatched it perhaps a dozen times or so. I know the dialogue, I know what happens next all the way to the end, but I still watch it.
