The game spans four CDs and needs all that space to hold both the gorgeous graphics and hours of high-quality speech. Everyone you meet has plenty to say, and you'll want to listen to everything because the game contains some of the most brilliant voice acting ever recorded. Each character has such a distinct and engaging voice that you could play this game with your eyes closed and it would maintain much of its beauty, although you likely won't want to blink after your first glimpse of the game's detailed environments. The graphics run at a feeble maximum resolution of 640 x 480 but are packed with enough atmosphere and animation that they look great even on a large monitor.
The Longest Journey obviously excels from a technical standpoint, but it's the writing that really makes it memorable. April maintains a diary that can be read to give players further insight into the game's strange events, and into April's mind as well. Lengthy conversations that seem tedious at first later serve to really make you care about the game's characters. They become more than simply people who exist to dispense items or tell you where to go next, and it's fascinating to watch April develop as she slowly absorbs the gravity of the situation into which she's been thrust. This game may seem like the longest--and most boring--journey at the beginning, but after a few hours adventure fans and anyone else who likes a good story will probably wish it would never end. loved it!! I absoultely loved this game! Not since Gaberial Knight 3 have an enjoyed playing a game so much. If you like adventure games I highly recommend this game. This game starts out introudcing us to April Ryan a seemingly ordanariy girl, until she begins her path towards her destiny. She is called a shifter, she has the power to walk between worlds. There is the world she lives in Stark (earth) and Arcaida. Arcaida is a place of magic and mytholiogy. April belives herself to be a normal person with work, freinds and school so having learned of Arcaida she begins to wonder about her sanity. But the fate of 2 worlds is a stake so she begins her quest. I really like the way the puzzles pretty much came together and you knew what you where looking for, her diary which she writes in throughout her adventure is a help as well. The characters are all interesting and the entire story is really a breath of fresh air. My only disappointment was once I had finished the game. Not that it was too short after all it is "The Longest Journey", but this game made me greedy I want more. I sincerely hope there is a second at some point in the future.
Great story with a great sense of humor!
I purchased The Longest Journey after having read review after review saying it was one of the best Adventure games ever. But the reviews of the game could not truly capture what it was about the game that makes it such an excellent work of art.
1) The characters come to life. You will find yourself getting involved with all of the characters. You will get to know them very well.. probably too well. The voice acting of the characters is fantastic, and you really feel like these computer generated characters are real people.
2) A great sense of humor. You are pretty much guaranteed a good laugh or two every few minutes of gameplay. The first night of playing this game, I found myself laughing almost constantly. There are a couple of parts in the story where the humor builds up so much that you will laugh non-stop for the entire conversation! I am a big fan of comedy, but never has a game made me laugh so hard.
3) The graphics are amazing. The characters could use a bit of work, but the backgrounds are all fantastic, as well as the movies.
If you are buying this for your children, beware, as the content is very mature. But if you're buying it for yourself, and you like adventure games, you will surely enjoy this one.
The combination of wonderful voice acting, great comedy, and beautiful videos depict one of the greatest stories of any computer game to date.
Perhaps the best adventure game ever.
I am not joking. No, this game is not particularly innovative like King's Quest (which basically put the genre on the map), but I would consider it to be the culmination of all that is good in adventure gaming. The main character, April Ryan, is very sympathetic and well-rounded; the supporting cast, even the characters who aren't on-screen for very long, are all vivid and well characterized; the environments are simply incredible; the plot is incredibly engaging; and, most importantly, when you finish this game, you will be left with a lot to honestly THINK about.
The gameplay itself is actually pretty average; it's a point-and-click interface (pretty standard for the genre), though some of the artwork used in the interface is highly amusing. The game itself has a very quirky sense of humor which is usually experienced by touching and looking at everything you can.
Overall, I would recommend this to any fan of the adventure game genre, and also to fans of RPGs with long, involved, and thought-provoking plots. Even though there is little branching, the replay value is rather high simply because the characters are that compelling (and because you'll notice details on further play-throughs which make the plot really come together).
