A peninsula that juts into the northwest Pacific from the coast of Siberia, Kamchatka would be remote simply by virtue of its location. But what added to its fabled isolation is that for many years the Kamchatka peninsula was a closely guarded top-secret military installation of the Soviet Union. With the Cold War receding into memory, the natural beauty of Kamchatka is now able to be explored, and this documentary does a wonderful job of showing the abundant wildlife and striking scenery that the Soviet war machine inadvertently preserved. The peninsula is home to the world's largest concentration of grizzly bears, and some of the world's largest eagles soar overhead. Millions of salmon swim up Kamchatka's many rivers to spawn, and minks, sables, silver foxes, and Siberian bighorn sheep roam the magnificent mountainous landscape. This video, which was shown as an installment of PBS's Living Edens series, features spectacular photography, which includes awesome helicopter shots of cliffs that soar high above the ocean to close-ups of sea birds and other animals in their utterly natural habitats. The narration is intelligent, focusing mostly on the lives of the animals that have flourished in this strikingly unspoiled region. --Robert J. McNamara
