David Gale(Kevin Spacey) plays as a death row convict with only 4 days to go until he is executed. David Gale agrees to spend 2 hours a day talking with reporter Bitsy Bloom(Kate Winslet) who is there to find out if he really did rape and murder his Death Watch partner Constance(Laura Linney). Bitsy is very sure David is innocent and she sets off seeking for proof that he did not rape while her cohortn intern reporter Zack(Gabriel Mann) pieces together the clues.

I thought the movie was great, the acting was overall well done. Kevin Spacey acted well as a man a ready to be executed and during the flashbacks of before he was convivted he acts well as a sad, depressed man who had just lost his wife, son and job as a philosophy teacher. The only time i thought his acting was silly was the scene were he is stumbling on streets talking to people about philosphy and trying to act drunk which he couldn't do, otherwise his acting was good.

I thought Kate Winslets acting as a reporter was silly seeming,she tried to have a good american accent, however failed and she always kept the same facial expression, apart from that her acting was fine or maybe a bit below fine.

The topic of the story was interesting, it was on capital punishment a very interesting topic for a film and i really like the twist at the end which raised my rating of 3 stars to 4 stars. The main thing that bothered me about this film is that it was a bit depressing, like i mean it would be pretty depressing to live a life like Kevin Spacey in the film and i found the scene were Kate Winslet and Gabriel Mann watch the tape pretty depressing, and i though it was a bit pointless how before the key flashbacks there would be quick cuts to words on paper in chalk boards(RAPE, REPUTATION, ACCUSATION, MURDER) and then the camera would spin. Pretty annoying bit of editing eh.

All in all, excellent topic, good acting, good story, excellent message.

Mindless and cliche thriller that could have been much more
The Life of David Gale revolves around hot-to-trot reporter Bitzy Bloom (why the screenwritter chose that name out of every other name in the world I will never know.) Bitzy (Kate Winslet) is to interview former college professer and well known death row abolitionist David Gale (Kevin Spacey). Ironically enough he is on death row for the rape and murder of one of his colleges/friends played by Laura Linney.
Now, Bisty has three days to figure out if Davids story of being framed is true, and who the real culprit is.
SOUNDS ORIGINAL AND INTRUIGING EH? NOT REALLY.
This was a big suprise especially from director Alan Parker who has brought us classics like Angel Heart and Midnight Express.
Where the movie failed is where 2/3 of thrillers these days do, comming up with an original plotline without the overuse of cliches and wannabe twists. This movie is full of both.
While Kevin Spacey underplays the role and delivers a rock solid performance, Titanic chick Kate Winselt overacts to the point of no return. This makes the film even more unbeliveable.
Laura Linney delivers a belivable and moving performance as the over-zelick death row abolitionist who will stop at nothing to prove a cause. Unfortunatly neither Spacey or Linney's performances can save a screenplay that uses the "out of service" cell phone cliche and is expected to be taken seriously.
I understand what The Life of David Gale was trying to deliver in terms of its message on death row and capital punishment, but it did not need to be delivered to us in a package marked cliche.

TRULY AN AMAZING MOVIE. DAVID GALE IS ON DEATH ROW JUST 4 DAYS AWAY FROM HIS EXECUTION. HE CALLS ON ONE REPORTER, A MS. BITSEY BLOOM, (PLAYED BY KATE WINSLET) TO CONDUCT HIS FINAL INTERVIEW OVER A 3 DAY PERIOD (THE LAST 3 DAYS BEOFRE HIS EXECUTION DAY). AS SHE SPENDS MORE TIME WITH HIM BITSEY STARTS TO THINK THAT MAYBE DAVID REALLY HAS BEEN SET UP AND IS ACTUALLY INNOCENT OF THIS MURDER. SHE RACES AGAINST TIME TO FIND THE EVIDENCE WHICH WILL PROVE HIS INNOCENCE AND SPARE HIS LIFE. WILL SHE MAKE IT? AND WHAT EXACTLY WILL SHE FIND? YOU'LL HAVE TO WATCH IT FOR YOURSELF TO FIND THAT OUT! BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY AN INTENSE AND A VERY EMOTIONAL MOVIE. I HAD IT FIGURED OUT ABOUT MID-WAY THROUGH THE STORY WHICH WAS A LITTLE BIT DISSAPOINTING TO ME BUT IT WAS STILL A GOOD MOVIE. AND IT RAISES SOME INTERSTING QUESTIONS SUCH AS: ARE SOME CAUSES REALLY WORTH DYING FOR? AND SHOULD WE (AS HUMAN BEINGS) HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHO LIVES AND WHO DIES? AND WHERE SHOULD WE DRAW THE LINE? LASTLY, WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO DIE FOR SOMETHING YOU BELIEVED IN?
