The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea.
The unicorn discovers that she is the last unicorn in the world, and sets off to find the others. She meets Schmendrick the Magician--whose magic seldom works, and never as he intended--when he rescues her from Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival, where only some of the mythical beasts displayed are illusions. They are joined by Molly Grue, who believes in legends despite her experiences with a Robin Hood wannabe and his unmerry men. Ahead wait King Haggard and his Red Bull, who banished unicorns from the land.
This is a book no fantasy reader should miss; Beagle argues brilliantly the need for magic in our lives and the folly of forgetting to dream. --Nona Vero

Customer Reviews of The Last Unicorn
A classic piece of fantasy literature and excellent story. In the genre of fantasy, there are few books that can be considered "classics," as it's very difficult to create a classic and universally-loved story set within a fantasy world. Members of this elite club include "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkein, "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Caroll, and "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis. Peter S. Beagle also joins this membership with his classic "The Last Unicorn", a beautfully crafted and utterly wonderful story.
The story deals with a unicorn who discovers she is the last of her kind. She sets out to find her missing race, but ends up with more than she bargains for. With the help of a bumbling magician and a maid, she must face an evil king who uses a mysterious creature for a purpose not even she could imagine.
The story is perhaps one of the most beautifully crafted stories in all of fantasy. It is far from being an epic - it's more of a short story that happens to be long - but it still makes for a captivating read. And the story doesn't always take itself seriously; there's a kind of wry humor that might be found in a Disney-like cartoon. However, "The Last Unicorn" is far from a Disney-esque book. There is a subtle yet undeniable dark tone in the story, and the characters have real personalities and character development, with flaws and irregularities. In the span of a relatively short novel, Beagle's world is realized with such amazing beauty and skill it's difficult not to be engrossed in his simple yet elegant prose.
Although it's most likely out of print by now, I seriously reccommend finding this book. If "The Lord of the Rings" is the Bible of fantasy, then "The Last Unicorn" is the equivalent of a book written by Max Lucado. It's suitable for all ages, and it beats the movie by a long shot. You will laugh, you will cry, you will feel satisfied. "The Last Unicorn" is one of fantasy's unquestionable classics.
The Last Unicorn-a wonderful fantasy tale
The Last Unicorn is wonderful fantasy tale for children and adults alike. Although no longer carried by most libraries, the book is still a wonderful tale to read and re-read many times over. Written by Peter S. Beagle, "The Last Unicorn" gives one a sense of viewing another time and place seperate from the outside world yet within the minds of us all. Being the only Unicorn in the world gives her a quest: to find what happened to others of her kind. She becomes mortal for a brief period, and is the only unicorn that has ever loved a human being for more than a short time.
During her quest she meets King Haggard, who is never happy except when he sees the unicorns he has had the Red Bull (some say the Devil himself) capture them all and imprison them within the sea.
Molly Grue, an old yet still pure maiden, joins the quest early on and points Schemdrick the clumsy yet powerful Magician, a person who is under a spell to remain immortal until he has become a true wizard. Molly becomes a valuable
What insight!!
This is the first book by Peter S. Beagle that I ever read and it remains my favorite. Beagle has such a beautiful talent to deict good and evil very well but also in such a light that you end the book with a renewed hope and beautiful view of life. I rarely read a boo more than once but I have read this book about half a dozen times and am about to read it again. The world just more beautiful when I read it and colors seem to become more vibrant. Any book that helps you look at life, even when it's a fantasy, in such a way that you see the bad but you retain that ope for the good and dreams seem possible is one I want not only on my shelf but several more copies to give out to friends and family.
