Although part of the A&E Bible mystery series, this 45-minute installment examines a historical puzzle not included in the Bible: the failed Jewish uprising against the Romans three decades after Jesus' execution. Using eight people as touchstones (such as Masada resistance leader Eleazar ben Jair and rebel-turned-historian Josephus), narrator Richard Kiley traces the beginnings of the revolt through massacres like the one at Gamala, leaving just two survivors, to the (accidental?) burning of the temple in Jerusalem. Jean Simmons reads from the only surviving account of the times, penned by Josephus himself. The mystery stems from the question of Josephus's reliability as a historian, since the Jewish rebel is considered a traitor for making a pact with the Romans, and from the fact that he leaves large gaps in his writings. This installment proves to be one of the most fascinating of the series, as it focuses on events little known to those whose knowledge of those times ends where the Bible does. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews of The Last Revolt
Done in a extremely entertaining and thought provoking way. The producers do a near perfect job in creating a documentary that is extremely entertaining by introducting the key characters and elaborating their role in the gripping drama as it unfolds. The mood they create throughout the script keeps you glued to the screen, they do a great job of keeping the viewer constantly trying to unravel the different theories to what really occured and why.(This is enhanced by the great guest commentators who go back and forth throughout the script each giving a different opinion at what they think really transpired.) The music and the pictures are very powerful in creating a eerie foreboding pace during the sequences where they postulate theories on the events, they then intensify during the very gripping battle scenes. This is the best video in the entire series that I've seen, as entertaining as any great historical movie. (The siege of Gamala and Jerusalem are excellently choreographed.)
