Customer Reviews of The Lair of the White Worm
campy - cultish - keneth anger inspired - vampire erotica! can you imagine pitching this film?...
'guys! i read this bram stoker story and i think it could make a great movie... hear me out. there's this giant (really really really phallic) white, snake god that likes to eat virgin, human, women... but we'll also have a half snake, half human, pseudo vampire villian-ess ... and then we'll have cute, virginal (biblically referenced) blonde, sisters.... there's gonna be acid-like dream sequences with weird, violent, sexual situations.... wait! where are you guys going? come back.... i haven't told you the best part yet!!....'
well, however he managed to get it going... ken russell scored (again) with this movie. the tone of the whole film (not totally tongue-in-cheek, but really campy.) is over-all quite funny; there's disturbing, over-the-top, horrific moments in the film when you're not sure if you should say 'this is SO wrong!' or you should burst out laughing.... trust your gut - laugh.
in the end, if anything is truly unusual about the film its the presence of hugh grant.... and although he gives a perfect performance, what the heck is hugh grant doing in such a random, bizarre movie?!?! but he fits... and he pulls it off.
so - watch lair of the white worm if you dare?....
First Class Trash
This one was despised by the serious critics, but all that means is that they weren't weird enough to enjoy it. All right, it's trash. But it's great trash. It's my idea of a feel-good movie. It's kinky, erotic, scary, and funny. And bright. Literally. After zillions of creepy, dark, scary scenes in movies, the sunshine and well-lit rooms in this one emphasize the horror scenes. But who cares about the lighting? It's main attraction is an over-the-top performance by Amanda Donohoe as a very bad girl. Upper-crust Hugh Grant and his cohorts have a lot of fun trying to evade her slithery grasp. That's about all you need to know. But for heaven's sakes, don't take it seriously. If you hate it, you'll really hate it.
Campy as hell
but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This is typical Russell; weird non-fitting dreams, and definietly not enough violence, horror or sex when, here, it wouldn't be superfluous, but highly helpful in making the film better. The acting is interesting, to say the least. Worth a watch or two, but try to get a cheap used copy.
