Strong points of the season include Bette and Kit confronting the death of their father (the superb Ossie Davis) and Shane's new job as a gopher for a high-powered Hollywood producer (the equally superb Camryn Manheim). Less strong are the distracting, neo-expressionistic passages meant to be glimpses into Jenny's creative mind and the interminable use of the series' theme song--re-interpreted in a number of genres--to the point of distraction. Mark's voyeurism, which crosses all sorts of boundaries as he installs hidden cameras around the house, is a brilliant way to challenge male viewers who may tune in just to TiVo their way to the sex scenes. That said, the arc of that particular story grows increasingly far-fetched as Mark somehow avoids criminal prosecution and instead endures the horrible fate of having Jenny refuse his offer of coffee and a muffin. Despite its flaws, The L Word is a show that deserves to be cheered on, not for its politics, but for the skillful way it conveys complex human entanglements with sensitivity. --Ryan Boudinot

Customer Reviews of The L Word - The Complete Second Season
Best in Show- Alice and Dana The only reason I got this was to originally see how Alice and Dana came to be a hot couple on the L Word. Not for some perverted reasons! The Helena/Bette feud is almost enough to put on Celebrity Deathmatch. Erin Daniels and Leisha Hailey pull off incredible performances as the hottest couple in this season, only in this season. From 'Rules of Un-Attraction' to the episode "Loud and Proud", they are more than worth the final total. <

>They kill off the relationship in the next season and they kill off Dana just when she's recovering from Cancer. That was the worst mistake Elaine Chaiken ever made. Don't even bother renting the next season or watching showtime. Just get this and that will be all you need for loving and living with the L Word.
Mediocre season.
The first season of The L-Word was excellent. The second season? As my title states, was mediocre. If the writers had spent more time coming up with compelling storylines and less time promoting the rock band Betty and taking cheap shots at Republicans, the season would have been decent instead of just average.

>The best thing about Season 2 is the opening theme and Helena Peabody(Rachel Shelley). Her character is bad in a good way. She has some spice, and is a worthy adversary to Jennifer Beals. Of course, in Season 3, they've made Helena nicer to make her more bearable to the audience, but that's another review for another time.

>One thing that bothers me about this show is their propensity to make everyone in throwing distance gay. Example, Dana's gay. Okay. But to make her brother gay as well? Not to mention the gay love experienced by Dana's mother when the mother was young. What are the odds of three gay people in the same immediate family?

>One other thing: Jenny. Now, I could swallow the unlikeliness that Jenny never realized she liked women until she moved to L.A. and met Marina; but for her to go from straight to bi to gay in a season and a half? Her love and attraction for Tim was real, yet she's just gay now? Don't the producers realize that they are shooting holes in the entire gay argument that all people are born what we are and that we can't change. If gays scoff when people claim to have "changed" from gay to straight because the lifestyle is unacceptable, then how can gays in turn have a storyline where legitimately straight or bi people can simply abandon the other parts of their sexuality for the gay life? They're having characters switch sexuality at will just for the convenience of plot. How lazy and lame.

>On a whole the show is still worth watching, albeit sparingly, even as it delves into head-scratching directions with each subsequent season.

>Also, Jennifer Beals deserves to be nominated for an Emmy.
A wonderful show
You do not have to be "L" to love this show! It is addictive. The acting is perfect, and the writers do a great job. I am hooked. I can't wait until season 4.
