Jimmy has a calling to box and nothing can stop it, not even the veto of his parents. So he spars in secret, sneaking down to the local gym to meet with his mentor/trainer Harry. Still, he's haunted by guilt, manifested as the specter of his father, glowering at him in the ring. Complicating matters is the plight of his best friend, who hates boxing but is forced into the sport by his wealthy father. Rod Steiger (In the Heat of the Night) does the gruff, heart-of-gold duties as Harry. The relationship between the two is believable and touching but comes to an abrupt end when Harry succumbs to a heart attack just as a competitor rats out Jimmy to his parents. While the ending is predictably upbeat, there are dark moments along the way and some tough boxing scenes, making this most appropriate for ages 8 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews of The Kid
THIS IS NOT THE WALT DISNEY MOVIE, AMAZON MADE AN ERROR I haven't seen the movie yet, I have one unopened copy. This is just a warning to those who want to buy this dvd expecting to get the Disney movie The Kid starring Bruce Willis. This is NOT that movie. In the product details, Amazon put Walt Disney as the studio that released this film, but it is not correct, it was Miramax Home Entertainment. This movie stars Jeff Saumier, Ray Aranha, Mark Camacho, Jane Wheeler and the legendary Rod Steiger. The dvd back cover boasts that this movie is like "Rocky Meets The Karate Kid." Again, this is not a review but just a helpful tip to those who want to buy this dvd.
Ugh! This is not that THE KID.
From the opening credits with its unispired music that goes on and on, and the opening dialog, this is a real stinker. Dark moments make it appropriate only for older persons, but older persons will find they can't sit through the stunningly poor script. I only bought this because is was very inexpensive, and I thought I was getting Disneys the kid.
