Like The Flintstones, The Jetsons borrowed heavily from live-action sitcoms, notably The Donna Reed Show and Hazel. The 21st century became a Futurelux vision of a '60s suburb. George Jetson (voiced by George O'Hanlon) pushed buttons for the penny-pinching Mr. Spacely (Mel Blanc). Judy (Janet Waldo) was a typical teenager with a crush on rock & roll singer Jet Screamer. Elroy (Daws Butler) was a bright little boy whose experiments always blew up. Astro (Don Messick) was one of the first anthropomorphic dogs that became a Hanna-Barbera standard. Jane (Penny Singleton, basically reprising her role in the Blondie films) kept everyone and everything on course. The Flintstones used rocks and animals to approximate everyday appliances; The Jetsons had high-tech gadgets that invariably malfunctioned and clobbered George.
Aside from two commentaries by Waldo and a short making-of video with old footage of Hanna and Barbera, the DVD set has little in the way of extras: no bumpers, commercials, etc. The Jetsons hardly ranks as great animation, but for anyone who grew up during the '60s and '70s, these discs are the comforting video equivalent of a slice of yellow cake with fudge frosting and a glass of milk. (Rated G: alcohol and tobacco use, minor cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews of The Jetsons - The Complete First Season
Classic animated show whose run was far too short. Most everyone I am sure would have already recognized this as the "real Jetsons" from the early 60's. Not that poor imitation of "new Jetson episodes" that were created sometime back in the mid to late 80's. But I'll admit I wondered when I saw "Season One" in the description as I am thinking there were enough of those latter episodes for more than one season to exist. But if by chance you were wondering too, rest assured this is original Jetson's that existed for only that one classic season. <

>If you enjoyed these original episodes, either as I did as a kid at the time they were new or in the years they ran in syndication (well, actually I did that too), you should enjoy this package. The video and audio quality are excellent on my set. What I personally found interesting, looking back at the early 1960's imagination of Hanna Barbara and the writing staff, is not only what they foresaw that could be part of the future that so far are not part of our present day, but also some things they couldn't foresee that are part of our present day. They had video phones in practical everyday commercial use, moving sidewalks, space cars, commercial traffic to the moon and the planets, robot secretary's and football players, and rapid transit so fast Judy could go swimming after school in Acapulco and be back home in time for dinner. Yet, George still worked on a computer the size of the old style of the time where the hard drive took up an entire wall or more and these robot secretary's typed on typewriters with no sign of word processors or personal computers and no existence of spell check, and George at least once received a "tele tape", which of course today would be on some kind of CD or disc. Interesting though, in one of the final episodes of the season (actually the final if remember correctly) a classmate of Elroy's was watching the "one millionth or one billionth rerun of The Flintstones" on an wrist television or video device. Today we have cell phones with Internet and video capability so there was at least one future sight by the creative staff way back then that has basically become reality today. <

>It was very interesting for me to view these episodes, in their entirety, after the years of edited syndication and, more recently, years of not seeing them at all. I was surprised to realize Rosie the Robot Maid appeared so few times. Unless I missed something, which I'll admit I easily could have, she appears only twice, in the first episode and later when Henry creates "Mac". I have enjoyed this DVD set, I only wish there had been more seasons done back then, at the beginning, when the creativity was fresh and alive. <

Love it
I love the Jetsons so I was pretty pleased with this purchase. My only complaint would be the packaging. The outer sleeve is made of plastic and the insert that holds the dvd's fits in very tightly so I have a hard time getting it out...don't want to tear/crack the plastic shell. Other than that, this DVD set is great!
Still a fascinating, funny look back at a look forward
I'll say this up front -- I'm not the biggest Hanna-Barbera fan when it comes to their creativity. Usually, when they aren't ripping off others (sometimes without attribution, even 40 years later), they were ripping off themselves.

>Yet, with The Jetsons, they might have been more creative in that original first season than they were in entire runs of some of their other animated series.

>The setup of the show could be said to be "The Futuristic Flintstones, Minus The Rubbles." Again, ripping themselves off. But while the H-B boys never held themselves out to be a Asimov and Bradbury, they did a solid job of projection with some subtle commentary on the future by extrapolating the present (as they saw it).

>George's incredibly short work week and the push-button convenience of their apartment? Judgements on moving violations were instantaneous by judges who were either sponsored or on tape.

>Check out the architecture and some of the interior design. It's only a slightly exaggerated version of the ultra-geometric modern 1960s design, popular in banks and schools of the era and replicated today in some buildings. As a matter of fact, the nearby supermarket built in 1998 is called "The Jetsons Publix" by many of us locals. Upon seeing a bank in one episode, I was struck by how it resembled a nearby bank built just a few years ago.

>Another plus for this DVD set -- like The Flintstones DVD sets, you get full episodes with original opening and closing credits. Even the 1960s episodes shown on Boomerang often strip The Jetsons classic closing credits in favor of static closing credits that combine the 1960s eps with the 1980s syndicated eps. OK, there is that episode-preceding bumper with the episode title that has Orbity from the 1980s episodes, but that's forgivable.

>The extras are weak, which takes this DVD down a step. Still, I glad I bought it. I find some of the episodes more amusing and interesting now than when I was 10 and watching on Saturday or Sunday morning.
