Customer Reviews of The House of the Seven Gables
House of Seven Gables--A Great Spooky Opera I was intrigued by the Amazon review from last spring of this work, by a composer whose music I do not know, and have been most impressed by the track record of the Manhattan School's other CD recordings, many of them premieres of American compositions--and so purchased the CD. The MSM opera program, too little known and perhaps overshadowed by the other NYC music school at Lincoln Center(?) has turned out some wonderful recordings. If the actual staged productions are as fine as the musical performances, this is a real find.
The Hawthorne story forms a part of our own American literary history and so for a young composer to take it on is ambitious. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmospheric textures of the work, the committed performances of the excellent cast, and take small issue with your reviewer over the CD's orchestral impact, which I find impressive for a non-pro group. Conductor David Gilbert has led the New York Philharmonic--I heard him years back--and is first-rate. The school--and this CD--are lucky to have him on hand. Albany Music continues to do the music world the admirable service of sponsoring contemporary American compositions. Thank you.
Gables--Great Recording of a World Premiere
I saw the premiere of this here in New York and thought it was a fantastic piece. The recording gave me a chance to revisit it.
Eyerly displays a great sense of music and drama finding clever ways to make Hawthorne's characters come alive. The piece is funny, dramatic, and sometimes a little scary. All of this is brilliantly encompassed in the music and libretto, which Eyerly wrote himself.
The recording is live, and not without some flaws. But it is surprisingly well miked and the student cast is astonishingly strong. I wish I could say the same for the orchestra, but they do fine and the recording is well worth having. I can't wait to hear his next opera!
